Flyers notes 1-22-06

Jamie Storr who was backup goalie to Antero Niittymaki for the 17 games that Robert Esche was out has a rather interesting story. A story that LA Kings fans know, but fans here in the east probably haven’t heard. Storr is half Japanese which you really don’t see at all by looking at him. Keiko, Storr’s Japanese mother was born on December 7, 1941. The date Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Keiko met Jim by chance when her flight back to Japan was cancelled. They married within a year and had Jamie about 4 years later. Jamie grew up in Toronto and is very proud of his Japanese heritage. Complete story can be found here.
Storr has won two in a row since being sent back across the parking lot to the Phantoms.

The second annual Goals for Giving hockey benefit will take place at the Flyers Skate Zone in the Far Northeast from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19. Proceeds benefit a range of juvenile services. Flyer alums participating include Brian Propp, Joe Watson, Bob Kelly and Larry Goodenough. Tickets are $20, $10 for kids. For more info call 610-260-4675 or contact [email protected].

Flyers prospect Steve Downie was suspended for 5 games a second time this season for going after Andrew Gibbons in the final 5 minutes of a game. Gibbons turtled, but Downie still threw punches. This after getting 10-minute misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Downie has been watched closely since the incident with teammate Akim Aliu. Downie was playing for the Windsor Spitfires when he crosschecked Akim Aliu in the mouth. This exposed incidents of hazing and led to Downie being traded to the Peterborough Petes.
He needs to learn how to manage his emotions and play within the game. He is starting to be compared to Billy Tibbetts and that is not a good thing.

The Flyers have 5 of the top 12 players drafted in 1990 in the organization.
Petr Nedved #2, Keith Primeau #3, Derian Hatcher #8, John Slaney #9, and Turner Stevenson #12. Slaney plays for the Phantoms.
Four other players from that first around also played for the Flyers at some point. Mike Ricci, the Flyers #4 pick, Mark Greig, Karl Dykhuis and Shawn Antoski.
Other first round picks currently in the Flyers organization include Jamie Storr #7 in 1994, Mike Rathje #3 in 1992, Jeff Carter #11 in 2003, Ben Eager #23 in 2002, Peter Forsberg #6 in 1991, Simon Gagne #22 in 1998, Mike Richards #24 in 2003 and R.J. Umberger #16 in 2001.

Petr Nedved has said it has been difficult being away from his wife while playing in Phoenix, she lives in New York.
Will Petr Nedved be able to perform better being closer to his wife, supermodel Veronica Varekova?

I don’ know about Petr, but that would motivate me.
