The Flyers lost another shootout this time to the Devils 2-1, another low scoring defensive battle that makes a typical Devils-Flyers game.
The Flyer’s only goal came from Brian Savage in the second period with assists from Mike Rathje and Peter Forsberg. The goal given up by Esche in the first was a bad one. He mishandled the puck behind the net and was caught. Besides that one mistake Esche played a great game in goal stopping 31 of 32 shots.
I thought we played a really good hockey game. The second and third periods were excellent for us. To come back and play the way we did is a really good step for us. We got a tremendous effort from our younger guys, and all in all, it’s a really good way to start this stretch here. Coach Ken Hitchcock.
Personally I don’t see how the third period was a good one, being out shot 15-4. Besides the second period play overall the Flyers were slow. It just looked like they were playing for a tie. The physical game wasn’t there either.
Brodeur, Esche and Gionta were the 3 stars.
With Handzus missing last nights game that leaves only Mike Knuble as the only Flyer to play in all 59 games so far this season. Brian Savage has 7 goals on the year, 3 in the last 3 games. Flyers are on a 4 game road losing streak. Ryan Ready was recalled from the Phantoms to fill in for Simon Gagne.
