The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the Flyers have agreed to a five-year deal with forward Simon Gagne worth $5.25 million a season.
No ‘official’ word yet, but if true it is a relief to finally have it done.
The deal is reported a 5 year deal at $5.25 million a year. I think in the backend this is a pretty good deal for the Flyers. They won’t have to worry about resigning him until he is 31.
The Flyers have more work to do managing the salary cap. With Gagne signing at 5.25 the Flyers are right at the cap if not a little over depending on who plays with the Flyers and who plays with the Phantoms.
This meant enough to me that I went and found a computer. Pretty good? Come on, At 5.25 Gagne is a steal, I’m pretty sure there were teams willing to give him more than that.
It is confirmed by the Flyers website now as well.
Anyways … now this is all over, we can look forward to the season, and the projections just got that much better!
Hope you’re having a great September all, I’ll see ya when I get back!
I wouldn’t call it a steal just because other teams would overpay for him. Flyers could have signed Chara for $6.5 mill and some people would have considered that a steal. Personally I think that guy is way overpaid.
Anyway back to Gagne, I was a little surprised to see his salary not increase in years 3, 4 and 5 of the contract. Those last few years if Gagne progresses like he has could be a steal for the Flyers. But who knows, by then Forsberg could be retiring and Gagne’s wouldn’t have what he brings to the line.
Most contracts don’t do that anymore though because of the cap, at least as far as I’ve seen. I think that’s the biggest part of the “Steal” because we have him at that price for 5 years. I think by the time that 5 years is up, we’ll be able to lock him up pretty much to a similar deal for a little less. I woulnd’t be suprised to see Gagne as a Flyer for life. Players tend to be very committed to a team that will commit to them (well, unless you’re Serg Federov of course)
