In January of 1980, when Ronald Regan took office and began to build the largest “peacetime” army in the history of the country, a group of collegiate and amateur hockey players were rounding out a long stretch of international hockey in preparation for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Little did they know their actions in the month to come would irrevocably tie Russians and hockey together in the mindset of the common American. By the time the winter of 1980 rolled around we had been at cold war with the Russians for almost 40 years. They had pointed missels at us, we had pointed missels at them, they had spied on us, we had done the same to them -things had not been going well between the two most powerful nations in world
