Dogfight

Back in WWII and before, a pilot obtained the title ‘ace’ by shooting down (usually) 5 or more enemy planes in a single day.  They usually had to go against overwhelming odds, being outnumbered and often getting regularly shot up.   The most prestigious and renowned pilots would receive the Distinguished Flying Cross.
