As first reported in the Courier-Post, the Flyers decided to place Randy Jones on waivers on Saturday, opening the door for forwards Blair Betts and James van Riemsdyk and defenseman Danny Syvret to begin the season with the Flyers. With a salary of $3 million and a cap hit of $2.75 million, Jones was simply too expensive for a sixth defenseman and the cap relief will allow the Flyers to sign Betts as their fourth-line center, keep van Riemsdyk as a second- or third-line winger, and promote Syvret from the Phantoms to the Flyers
