It’s been two weeks since Peter Laviolette took over for John Stevens and if you think he knows a whole lot more about his players than their names and positions, think again. “To think you can walk in here and (immediately) establish any type of relationship with players is probably not right,†Laviolette said. “It takes a while to figure people out and I’m sure they’re trying to figure me out. Those things take time.†Although he said one of his first priorities as coach would be getting to know each of his players personally, Laviolette has not yet conducted individual meetings with his players, instead using the majority of his time teaching an aggressive hunt-the-puck system. With eight games in his first 13 days on the job, Laviolette has conducted just two full practices and has resorted to teaching his system in-game on the bench. “I can write things on the board or show it on video, but it doesn’t take the place of getting on the ice and running it,†he said. “We’re caught between a rock and a hard place figuring out if they should be out there working on things or whether rest in more important.†Rest has won over, but not with the results Laviolette has been seeking.
