The Flyers have scheduled an 8 p.m. news conference to announce the firing of head coach John Stevens and the hiring of former Carolina Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette. Locked in a 1-6 tailspin with an overall record of 13-11-1, the Flyers are hoping the hard-edged style of Laviolette will snap their players to attention in the wake of Stevens’ low-key approach. In parts of four seasons with the Flyers, Stevens went 120-109-34 and reached the playoffs twice, going to the Eastern Conference finals two years ago and being eliminated in the first round last year.
