Hartnell benched in loss to Bruins

Struggling left wing Scott Hartnell was certainly not the only guilty party in the Flyers’ 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Thursdya night, but he spent nearly nine straight minutes of the final period glued to the bench. Once the Bruins extended their lead to 5-1, Hartnell, who has just one goal in his last 20 games, was then double-shifted for the remainder of the game. “I don’t know,” Hartnell said when asked why he was benched. “As for missing a couple of shifts, I really don’t know what to say.” When Flyers coach Peter Laviolette was asked why he benched Hartnell he responded, “I didn’t bench anybody.” Hartnell admitted his confidence is low and his shots are down – he’s on pace to finish with about 70 fewer shots than last year – but there is still time to salvage his season. “I’ve got to believe I can do things with the puck. Confidence is low but I’ve got to believe things will come around.” BRUINS 5, FLYERS 1: Any sense of security the Flyers built during their recent 7-1-1 stretch evaporated with a shoddy performance against the resilient Bruins. Facing each other for the first time since the Jan. 1 Winter Classic in Fenway Park, the Bruins outplayed the Flyers in all three zones and chased goaltender Michael Leighton with four goals on 21 shots
