The Flyers addressed their need for a depth defenseman Saturday when they claimed 6-foot-1, 218-pound defenseman Nick Boynton off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. “Nick is a right shot defenseman that will bring experience and depth to our team,†Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. Boynton was unavailable to play Saturday night in Ottawa, forcing rookie Erik Gustafsson to make his NHL debut in place of Chris Pronger, who sat out with a bruised right hand. To make room for Boynton on their 24-man roster, the Flyers temporarily assigned left wing James van Riemsdyk to the AHL Phantoms and inserted Nik Zherdev into the lineup for the first time in eight games
