It was not a complete surprise that Nik Zherdev cleared NHL waivers today at noon, but it was shocking to see him skating around the Wells Fargo Center ice for the Flyers’ morning skate. By showing up today it’s evident that Zherdev has no intentions of returning to Russia and walking away from the money remaining on his $2 million contract. If Zherdev agrees to report to the Phantoms the Flyers will continue to pay him his NHL salary, but his cap hit will come off the books, freeing $2 million for a top-nine forward or a depth defenseman. The Flyers reportedly inquired about Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote, who would serve as a seventh defenseman here in Philly.
