Flyers captain Chris Pronger was injured in the first period of Monday’s game after being stuck in the face by the stick of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mikhail Grabovski. Pronger covered his face and immediately skated to the Flyers dressing room. The stick appeared to hit Pronger near his eyes, and if one was struck, this injury could be serious. The Flyers’ only initial response was general manager Paul Holmgren issuing a statement saying, “Chris Pronger will not return.” There was no penalty called on the play and Flyers fans booed loudly, but, by rule, the referees made the correct call because Grabovski hit Pronger on the follow-through of his shot. Pronger went into the game leading the Flyers in ice time at 23 minutes, 30 seconds per game
