Meltzer’s Musings: No Letdown This Time

When all was said and done, the Philadelphia Flyers gained ground on the second-place Washington Capitals after the home-and-home set between the two teams.

Yes, it was only an aggregate one point when it should have been four. However, the bottom line from Tuesday’s 5-2 final at the Wells Fargo Center is that the Flyers rebounded from Sunday’s horrific collapse by building another three goal

Meanwhile, the top teams in the NHL can sometimes go an entire regular season without losing a game they’ve led at the second

STREIT ACQUISITION NOT PAYING DIVIDENDS THUS FAR

With each passing year, it has become tougher and tougher for NHL teams to significantly upgrade their bluelines through trades and free agent acquisitions. It is very much a seller’s market.

On a leaguewide basis, teams are locking their desirable defensemen into long-term contracts before the players hit the unrestricted free agent market.

Meltzer’s Musings: Running the Treadmill, VandeVelde, McGinn, Quick Hits

A strong period followed by a disastrous one. A seeming offensive breakthrough followed by a return to scuffling for goals. A win that raises hopes followed by a disheartening loss. The same players scratched from the lineup in favor of the same guys whom they had previously replaced for a stretch of games. An inability to climb above the .500 mark on the season.

That has basically been the Ph

Meltzer’s Musings: One of Those Glass Half-Full, Half-Empty Nights

Last night’s Flyers game in Ottawa was one of those crazy, seesaw nights: Leads of 1-0 and 3-2, deficits of 2-1 and 4-3. Gritty battles won. Defensive gaffes made. Adversity faced and overcome. On the whole, it was a fairly evenly played game, although I would give a slight edge to the Senators.

On the flip side any time a team scores first and also leads after two periods, coming away with l
