Marshy’s Memories: Power play Warming Up, Penalty Kill Cooling Off

Special teams play tends to run hot and hold over the course of any given year. A sampling of a few games is simply too small to worry about for the long haul.

Last season, for example, the Flyers started out the season by killing just two of the first eight penalties they took in games against Pittsburgh, Buffalo and New Jersey. Over that same span, the Flyers went 1-for-15 on the power play.

Meltzer’s Musings: Mason Deserves Olympic Consideration

The more I watch Steve Mason, the more I start to think that his excellent play so far this season is the real deal. It’s not question of statistics (2.13 goals against average, .931 save percentage in 14 starts; has yet to yield more than three goals in a game since coming to the Flyers from Columbus). Rather, it’s the total picture of how he approaches each game and then carries that plan into

Meltzer’s Musings: Five-of-Six from a Three-in-Four

If you knew before the start of the Flyers’ road trip that they would take five of a possible six points from a three-games-in-four-nights gauntlet of playing the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins and Winnipeg Jets, would you have gladly taken it?

I know I would.

However, it is galling any time a third period lead slips away. The Flyers carried a 2-1 lead into the final six minutes of re

Meltzer’s Musings: Workmanlike Win in Pittsburgh, Quick Hits

All hands were on deck for the Philadelphia Flyers as they extended their winning streak to three straight game by virtue of grinding out a 2-1 road win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brayden Schenn notched both goals for the Flyers, while Ray Emery turned back 30 of 31 Pittsburgh shots to notch the win.

On Tuesday, the Flyers built off a 4-2 win over Edmonton with a dominating 5-0 shutout win

FLYERS-SENATORS GAME WRAPUP

Teams often talk about playing a “complete 60-minute effort” but it pretty rare to live up to that ideal. There are almost always segments of the game — even brief ones — where things get tenuous. Perfection in hockey is virtually impossible to attain.

The Philadelphia Flyers may not have played 100 percent spotless hockey for 60 minutes but they came impressi

AWAY-HEAVY PORTION OF SEASON STARTS WITH TOUGH ROAD TRIP

On paper at least, the first six weeks of the Philadelphia Flyers’ 2013-14 schedule was the most favorable portion of the season docket from a travel and fatigue perspective. The club played seven of its first 11 games and 10 of its first 16 games at home.

Ideally, the team would have be sitting with a far better than it has right no

Meltzer’s Musings: Sunny Day in Philadelphia, Phantoms Win 6th in a Row

SUNNY DAY IN PHILADELPHIA

The Philadelphia Flyers could not undo the damage of 10 regulation losses and an overtime loss in a single day. They could not realistically score enough goals in one game to lift their 30th-ranked offense out of the bottom spot in the NHL.

What the Flyers could do was go out yesterday and play the game right way. They could restore a measure of offensive self-conf

Flyers Gameday: 11/9/13 vs. Edmonton

GAME PREVIEW (5:15 AM EST)

Submerged in an offensive abyss that has seen them score a miniscule 1.47 goals per game, something is bound to give when the Philadelphia Flyers (4-10-1) take on the NHL’s worst defensive team, the Edmonton Oilers (4-11-2) at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers have scored just 22 goals in 15 games, including just two in their last four matches.
