They are off to the worst start (1-7-0) and have the fewest goals (11) through eight games in the history of the franchise. They’ve been outscored 12-2 in third periods, which is the time of game where the best teams typically shine and the worst clubs fade.

FLYERS COME UP SMALL IN MEASURING STICK GAME

The Philadelphia Flyers (1-7-0) enter a week-long schedule break dragging a four-game losing streak along with them. The Flyers have the fewest points in the NHL. On Thursday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins (6-1-0) dispatched Philadelphia by a 4-1 count at the Wells Fargo Center.

If not for the stellar play of goaltender Steve Mason, the Flyers eas

GAME PREVIEW (10:00 AM EDT)

There is a sense of urgency any time the Philadelphia Flyers (1-6-0) play the archrival Pittsburgh Penguins (5-1-0). The Flyers did a lot of good things for two-plus periods and were especially solid in the opening 20 minutes. They st

All along, however, a winning team has to have a central identity. Is it a te

* Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking by phone and communicating by email respectively with a pair of longtime NHL referees, Paul Stewart and Kerry Fraser. I asked both about the situation in Tuesday’s game in which referees Kelly Sutherland and Darcy Burchell gave Craig Berube the choice between a four-minute five-on-four penalty and a two minute five-on-three.
