Meltzer’s Musings: Not Pretty, But a Much-Needed Win

GAME-IN-REVIEW: FLYERS 2 – PANTHERS 1

It wasn’t very pretty, but the Flyers gladly skated off with two points last night after downing the Florida Panthers, 2-1, in Craig Berube’s head coaching debut. Philadelphia benefited from a brilliant goaltending performance by Steve Mason, who stopped 33 of the 34 shots fired his way.

Mason made a pair of first period goals by Brayden Schenn and Br

Meltzer’s Musings: Flyers Fall to 0-3-0; Laughton Continues OHL Domination

GAME-IN-REVIEW: HURRICANES 2 – FLYERS 1

It is bad enough that the Philadelphia Flyers have started out the 2013-14 regular season with an 0-3-0 record after losing, 2-1, to the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday. Three-game stumbles can happen to any team, but is the WAY these Flyers lose games that is most disturbing. Coupled with the club’s 1-5-1 preseason record and missing the playoffs last year

Star Gazing: Stars Let Opener Slip Away

Amid all of the positive signs engendered by the Dallas Stars’ 5-0-2 preseason, there was one nagging and lingering issue from last season that popped up several times: the Stars had some trouble slamming the door when they held a one-goal lead in the third period.

That problem came right back to the forefront on opening night of the 2013-14 regular season. Dallas saw a 2-1 lead vanish in the t

Meltzer’s Musings: Newbury, Laughton, Holding the Lines, Scud Missiles

FRIDAY QUICK HITS

* The Flyers made a somewhat surprising roster move on Thursday, returning 2012 first-round pick Scott Laughton to the OHL’s Oshawa Generals one night after he was a healthy scratch on opening night. In his place, the club recalled veteran pro Kris Newbury from the Phantoms.

Laughton was stuck in a tough position this year. He has little to gain from a fourth season in the

Meltzer’s Musings: Solid Start, Fade at Finish for Flyers

GAME SYNOPSIS

In last season’s lockout-shortened regular season, 25 percent (12 of 48) of the Flyers games entered the third period tied. The team went 4-8-0 in those games, capturing an anemic eight of a possible 24 points that were within their grasp.

Unfortunately for Philadelphia, they got the 2013-14 regular season off on the same note, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Toronto Maple Lea

SHOULD FLYERS CARRY EIGHT DEFENSEMEN THIS SEASON?

The Philadelphia Flyers currently have the NHL’s most expensive defense corps. Entering the 2013-14 season, the team’s top seven defensemen — Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Luke Schenn, Mark Streit, Nicklas Grossmann, Andrej Meszaros and Erik Gustafsson — eat up a combined 43 percent ($27.85 million) of the NHL maximum $64.3 million salary cap
