Meltzer’s Musings: Quick Hits on Cleary, Rookie Game, Alt, Leier

FLYERS SIGN CLEARY

According to multiple sources, the Flyers have signed veteran left winger Daniel Cleary to a three-year contract. The deal is worth $2.75 million per season on the salary cap and contains a no-trade clause. The deal will become official when the team clears out sufficient cap space to accommodate the contract for the 34-year-old.

In hockey terms, Cleary is a valuable two-w

Meltzer’s Musings: Rookies Game vs.Capitals, Quick Hits

Flyers Rookies vs. Capitals Rookies

Canceled last year because of the NHL lockout, the annual Flyers vs. Capitals rookie game returns today with a match between the teams’ prospects in Arlington, Va. The opening face will drop at 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on the Flyers’ official Web site.

This year’s game should be an interesting one. I doubt that any player on either side wi

Meltzer’s Musings: Giroux and the 200-Foot Game, Rookie Camp Day 3

Claude Giroux and the 200-Foot Game

Heading into the 2013-14 season, the number one concern I have about the Philadelphia Flyers is the improvement of their commitment to team defense. For all the criticism that got directed the way of the club’s lack of puck movers on the blueline corps and inconsistent goaltending last year, I felt that an even bigger issue was a general lack of enthusiasm am

Meltzer’s Musings: Expectations for Lecavalier, Quick Hits

Vincent Lecavalier is not the player he was about five years ago. Flyers fans should not expect him to play at a superstar-caliber level on a regular basis. However, at age 33, he is still a quality second-line center who figures to be an excellent complement to top-line center Claude Giroux and a boon to the development of young linemate Brayden Schenn.

The Flyers wanted to add some size and

Meltzer’s Musings: Blueline Balance and Roster Battles

For a team with a defense corps that has been harshly maligned in the last few years, the Philadelphia Flyers have a lot of roster stability and decent depth heading into training camp. Barring injuries, there are five players who are locks to be in the starting lineup come opening night of the 2013-14 season: Kimmo Timonen, Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Mark Streit and Nicklas Grossmann.

Labo(u)r Day Musings: A Dream Dressed in Work Clothes

Flyers All-Lunchpail Team

Fred Shero used to refer to Bobby Clarke as a “dream dressed in work clothes.” The Flyers’ captain was the epitome of elite playmaking skill combined with a tireless work ethic and a fierce will to win. In honor of the Labo(u)r Day holiday in the U.S. and Canada, I came up with an all-time Flyers “Lunchpail Team” to recognize some of the hardest-working players in team

FLYERS LABOR DAY WEEKEND VIDEO COLLECTION

With the start of training camp around the corner and the 2013-14 regular season a month away and everyone else in the house still sound asleep on this early pre-Labor Day morning, I have been awake watching a slew of hockey-related videos on Youtube. Instead of blogging this morning, I figured it might be fun to collect and post a series of videos that
