Meltzer’s Musings: By the Numbers, Morin and Hägg in Action, Quick Hits

For many hockey fans, there is a sentimental attachment in associating a uniform number with a certain player. I know that I am very much someone who associates numbers with athletes.

For example, the Voorhees exit (exit 32) on I-295 en route to the Flyers’ practice facility in New Jersey will always be the “Carlton/Craven Exit” to me. I have been known to create PIN numbers and memorize park

Manning Signs a One-Year Contract

The Flyers have agreed to a one-year contract with restricted free agent defenseman Brandon Manning. It is a two-way deal, paying the 23-year-old blueliner $675,000 at the NHL level.

Originally signed by the Flyers in 2011 as undrafted rookie free agent after a stellar overage junior season for the Chilliwack Bruins, Manning has primarily played in the Amer

Meltzer’s Musings: Emery, Non-Roster Camp Invites, Hägg

Mature Emery Eager for Philadelphia Return

One of the biggest gambles Paul Holmgren has taken as Flyers general manager was taking a chance on goaltender Ray Emery in 2009. By the time Holmgren brought Emery back to Philly in 2013, the signing was hailed as a budget-friendly coup rather than just another roll of the goaltending dice.

Holmgren has always been someone who is willing to give t

Timonen May Extend NHL Career Beyond 2013-14

Shortly after signing a one-year contract extension with the Flyers for the 2013-14 season, defenseman Kimmo Timonen said that he was “ninety nine percent sure” that it would be his final campaign in the NHL. Now, the 38-year-old defenseman is reconsidering his future.

Yesterday, the four-time NHL All-Star told CSN Philly/HockeyBuzz writer Tim Pa

Olympics: Does a Player Owe More Loyalty to NHL Team or National Team?

In light of reports that Hockey Canada is “disappointed” in Claude Giroux for not attending the Olympic orientation/ team bonding activities in Calgary while rehabbing his recent surgery to repair torn tendons in his right index finger, I will reiterate what I wrote the other day. I think it is a manufactured controversy fr

Meltzer’s Musings: Rinaldo, Simmonds, Quick Hits

Will Rinaldo Continue His Improvement in 2013-14?

There aren’t many things that agitating Flyers’ winger Zac Rinaldo does quietly on the ice. His hits rattle the boards. His mouth is always running. But one thing he did manage to accomplish quietly last year was to improve significantly from his first NHL season.

Rinaldo backed up his brashness with hard work this year. He cut down on his ba

Meltzer’s Musings: Retired Jerseys, Firebirds, Sunday Fan Poll

Should Flyers Retire Any More Numbers?

The Flyers have retired five numbers in honor of great players of the past: Bernie Parent (#1), Mark Howe (#2), Barry Ashbee (#4), Bill Barber (#7) and Clarke (#16). Ashbee’s jersey retirement was a special case to honor a fallen team leader who represented the everyman player made good. The others are all Hockey Hall of Fame inductees and represent the be

Meltzer’s Musings: Giroux, Flyers’ Unlikeliest All-Star/Ashbee Winner

Giroux Still a Shoo-in for Canadian Olympic Team

Claude Giroux’s decision to skip Team Canada’s orientation camp following surgery to repair torn tendons in his right index finger is unlikely to affect his chances of playing in the Olympics next February. The fact that Hockey Canada does not plan to invite another NHL player (such as Dallas’ Jamie Benn) in his absence tells you all you need to

Meltzer’s Musings: Keith Allen Turns 90, Full Training Camp Details

NHL Legend Allen Turns 90

Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Keith Allen had his 90th birthday yesterday. A longtime AHL defenseman who spent parts of two NHL seasons with the Detroit Red Wings in the mid-1950s, the Saskatoon native is much better known for his accomplishments while working for the Flyers as its first coach and second general manager.

Allen was hired to guide the new expansion tea
