Holmgren: Flyers looking to move up in draft

In a perfect world, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren would like to sign goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, re-sign right wing Ville Leino and move up into the first two rounds of this weekend’s NHL draft. Whether he needs to trade Jeff Carter to make all of that happen remains to be seen. In a conference call with reporters today, Holmgren said he believes the salary cap will increase a “significant” amount and that he hopes the additional cap space affords him the opportunity to sign Bryzgalov, who is believed to be seeking in the neighborhood of $6 million a season, and Leino, who is believed to be seeking $3 million a year. Holmgren said negotiations with Bryzgalov will resume on Tuesday, but made it clear there are differences between the two sides on both the length and value of the contract.

Ilya Bryzgalov on Philadelphia and the Flyers

“I am pleased the Flyers thought enough of me to make the trade with the Coyotes. Philadelphia is a great city, a great organization and a great team with a rich history. I am looking forward to meeting with Paul Holmgren to discuss the possibility of us working together for many years to come. I would very much like to have the opportunity to play for the Flyers and be a part of the team Paul has assembled and to work with Paul and Mr. Snider to see if we can achieve the ultimate goal.

Paul Holmgren on Ilya Bryzgalov, Part 2

Q: What’s the conditional pick? “I’m not going to talk about it just because it’s a moot point right now, and when it happens, it happens. It’s not a first round pick or a second round pick, so you can go from there.” Q: Is that the reason you did this now instead of waiting closer to the draft, so you do have the time to hammer out something? “You never know what’s going to happen

Rome gets four games for hit on Horton

Too harsh? Too lenient? Vancouver Canucks defenseman Aaron Rome has been suspended for four games for delivering a late hit to Boston Bruins forward Nathan Horton in Game Three of the Stanley Cup Final, the National Hockey League announced today. “Two factors were considered in reaching this decision,” said NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. “The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury.” Rome was assessed a five-minute major penalty for interference and game misconduct at 5:07 of the first period.
