Carcillo suspended 2 games for outburst

Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Daniel Carcillo has been suspended for the period covering two regular season games, without pay, for his actions off the ice following the first period of Game #4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Boston Bruins on May 6, the National Hockey League announced today. National Hockey League Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy reached the decision following a hearing into the matter on May 13. The hearing was conducted pursuant to article 18.1 (on-ice discipline) and 18.2 (off-ice discipline) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, NHL By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution as a result of an incident outside of the officials’ locker room following the first period and a verbal confrontation with linesman Brian Murphy at the players’ bench prior to the start of the second period

Tall order: Flyers sign 6-foot-7 goalie

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’ 7”, 200-lb goaltender Niko Hovinen to an entry-level contract, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. Hovinen, 23 (3/16/88), played for Lahti of the Finnish Elite League during the 2010-11 season. He posted a record of 17-25-5 in 49 appearances, along with a 2.59 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and three shutouts. A native of Helskini, Hoivinen was a member of Finland’s IIHF World Championship team that defeated Sweden 6-1 in the final on May 15.

Flyers to host 2012 Winter Classic at Ballpark

By CHUCK GORMLEY Courier-Post Staff Are you ready to sing “Take me out to the hockey game?” The 2012 NHL Winter Classic is coming to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and is expected to match the Flyers against the New York Rangers, the Courier-Post learned late Thursday night. The game is expected to be played on Monday, Jan. 2 and highlight a week of hockey activity that will include high school and college hockey games on the infield of the Phillies’ seven-year-old ballpark. An announcement confirming Philadelphia as the site of next season’s Winter Classic is still weeks away but Flyers president Peter Luukko has been working with the NHL for years to land the midseason classic and said he believes it would be the perfect climax to New Year’s Day weekend. “If we are chosen to host the NHL Winter Classic, with our fans and the excitement of New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere would be fabulous,” Luukko said

Pronger has surgery, rehab begins in 6 weeks

Text from Flyers GM Paul Holmgren Pronger – surgery went very well. A disc fragment that was pressing up against a nerve was removed. Chris will begin a walking rehab in a few days. At week 6 post surgery will begin core strengthening. A full recovery is anticipated

Pronger to undergo back surgery Thursday
