Flyers can clinch playoff spot tonight if …

from NHL.com Here’s why Philadelphia and Washington can be safely in the playoffs after tonight’s action: * Philadelphia currently has 94 points and 41 non-shootout wins. If the Hurricanes lose in regulation to the Islanders, they can max out at 94 points and 38 non-shootout wins. If the Devils defeat the Capitals in a shootout, their maximum becomes 94 points and 41 non-shooutout wins. In that scenario the Flyers would earn the spot because they have clinched the next tiebreaker (Philadelphia has seven points against New Jersey to the Devils’ four with one game to play in the season series). * Washington would have 94 points and either 38 or 39 non-shootout wins with a victory.

Holmgren: Pronger still day-to-day

Just spoke with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, who says he is not overly concerned with Chris Pronger’s ailing right hand, even though he’s missed the past three games and showed up tonight in a soft cast. “It’s just to help facilitate the healing and to make him more comfortable. He’s had it a couple days now.

Pronger remains day-to-day, Boynton likely

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger referred all questions about his achey right hand to GM Paul Holmgren, who said nothing has changed much from Thursday when Pronger sat out the Flyers’ 3-2 win in Toronto. “Same,” Holmgren said. “We’ll see how it is tomorrow. He’s day to day with it

Laviolette blames himself for loss to Rangers

Photo:

Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach Peter Laviolette Q: The decision to give them a day off, is that something you say, ‘They need to go home, forget about this, and stay away from the rink for a day’? “If everyone is honest here and you look at the game as an isolated game, we had no gas. We had no energy, and I think to bring them in again, with the mental part of it and the physical part of it, I just didn’t see the good that it was going to do. More than anything, they need to catch a break, to kind of rebound on that. A team without energy, if the physical part is there, the mental part goes, and there was just nothing yesterday

Three things I’d do if I’m Peter Laviolette

Photo:

The Flyers are coming off their worst shutout loss since 1984. They have lost four in a row and are in danger of losing their grip on the Eastern Conference lead. And while it’s no time to panic, it is time to make a few changes and here are three I’d make: 1. Break up the Briere line

It’s Bobrovsky’s job to lose

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette has given rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky the ball and what he does with it will determine the Flyers’ fate. Used in an alternating role with veteran Brian Boucher through much of December, January and early February, Bobrovsky has started six of the Flyers’ last eight games and has gone 2-3-1, allowing three or more goals in all but one game. On Sunday, Laviolette must decide whether to give the Russian rookie his third start in four days when the Flyers visit the New York Rangers. “He wants to see how he does in back-to-back games,” Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen said
