Inside Flyers’ 3-2 loss to Maple Leafs

There were plenty of mistakes to go around, from defenseman Andrei Meszaros taking three penalties to his defense partner, Sean O’Donnell, losing a battle in the corner that resulted in Darryl Boyce’s game-winning goal with 4:30 remaining in the third period. Mike Richards set up a pair of Kris Versteeg goals, but it couldn’t stop the Flyers from losing two in a row for the first time since Christmas and see their eight-point lead in the Eastern Conference standings whittled to three. NOTES, QUOTES — The Flyers have blown third-period leads in two of their last three games and have been outscored 11-3 (minus empty-net goals) in their last six. “We’re supposed to get better every period and take over in the third period and dominate like we have in the past,” Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger said.

The NHL trade deadline came and went without incident for the Flyers today, meaning GM Paul Holmgren is satisfied his conference-leading club is good enough to go all the way this season. There were strong rumors the Flyers might acquire Minnesota Wild forward Chuck Kobasew and at least one player supported the idea, but Holmgren stuck to his guns, which means the Flyers look like this heading into the playoffs: GOALTENDERS: –Brian Boucher –Sergei Bobrovsky DEFENSE PAIRINGS: –Chris Pronger, Matt Carle –Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn –Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell FIRST LINE: –LW Scott Hartnell, C Danny Briere, RW Ville Leino SECOND LINE: –LW James van Riemsdyk, C Claude Giroux, RW Jeff Carter THIRD LINE: –Andreas Nodl, C Mike Richards, RW Kris Versteeg FOURTH LINE: –LW Dan Carcillo, C Blair Betts, RW Darroll Powe EXTRAS: LW Jody Shelley, RW Nik Zherdev, D Nick Boynton

Inside Flyers’ 4-1 loss in Ottawa

The Flyers addressed their need for a depth defenseman Saturday when they claimed 6-foot-1, 218-pound defenseman Nick Boynton off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks. “Nick is a right shot defenseman that will bring experience and depth to our team,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. Boynton was unavailable to play Saturday night in Ottawa, forcing rookie Erik Gustafsson to make his NHL debut in place of Chris Pronger, who sat out with a bruised right hand. To make room for Boynton on their 24-man roster, the Flyers temporarily assigned left wing James van Riemsdyk to the AHL Phantoms and inserted Nik Zherdev into the lineup for the first time in eight games

Pronger Questionable For Saturday’s Game

Looks like Chris Pronger’s right wrist may be a little worse than the Flyers let on last night. Pronger did not practice with the team on Friday and is likely to sit out Saturday night’s game in Ottawa. Pronger blocked a shot with about 6 minutes to go in Thursday night’s’ 4-3 OT win over the Islanders and an X-ray after th egajme showed no fracture. Pronger’s wrist swelled up overnight, so the Flyers called up defenseman Erik Gustafsson from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms. Gustafsson is joining the team today and will be available for tomorrow night’s game against the Senators.
