Inside Flyers’ 4-3 OT win over Isles

Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros endured the agony of allowing a game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation and the thrill of scoring a game-winning overtime goal in the span of about 5 minutes. Meszaros lost a crease battle with Matt Martin, who scored with 27.1 seconds left in regulation, but was on the ice in the final minute of the overtime period when he ripped a laser past goalie Al Montoya for his fifth goal of the season.

Zherdev clears, shows up at morning skate

It was not a complete surprise that Nik Zherdev cleared NHL waivers today at noon, but it was shocking to see him skating around the Wells Fargo Center ice for the Flyers’ morning skate. By showing up today it’s evident that Zherdev has no intentions of returning to Russia and walking away from the money remaining on his $2 million contract. If Zherdev agrees to report to the Phantoms the Flyers will continue to pay him his NHL salary, but his cap hit will come off the books, freeing $2 million for a top-nine forward or a depth defenseman. The Flyers reportedly inquired about Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote, who would serve as a seventh defenseman here in Philly.

Flyers part ways with Zherdev

The Flyers have placed right wing Nik Zherdev on waivers, allowing his agent Jay Grossman to strike a deal with another NHL team. “He asked us to look around for options,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “The request came to me to see if we could get him to another team. Nothing really came of that through a trade.” Zherdev, who signed a one-year, $2 million contract over the summer, has been a healthy scratch the past six games and has 15 goals this season

Inside Flyers’ 3-2 OT loss to Phoenix

Oskars Bartulis didn’t have much of a chance to prove he belongs in the Flyers’ lineup. Playing his first game since Jan. 11, Bartulis was fishing for a loose puck at the side of the net when Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall ran him over like a freight train, injuring his left shoulder. “Oskars is just standing there minding his own business,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “It was a late hit and depending on how Oskars is, yes, I have a little bit of a problem with it.

Inside Flyers’ 3-2 loss in Carolina

On an emotional night in which former Flyer Rod Brind’Amour had his No. 17 retired, the Flyers battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie the score in the third, only to have Erik Cole finish off a 2-on-1 with Joni Pitkanen for the game-winner with 3:03 remaining in regulation. The Flyers’ two goals came from unlikely sources — Blair Betts and Braydon Coburn – and a solid goaltending effort by Sergei Bobrovsky was wasted. The Flyers were forced to play without captain Mike Richards, who sat out the game with the flu.

Inside Flyers’ 4-2 win over the Panthers

One night after goaltender Brian Boucher stole the show by stopping Vincent Lecavalier, Simon Gagne, Steven Stamkos and Marty St. Louis on successive shootout attempts, rookie Sergei Bobrovsky was the man of the hour in Sunrise, Fla., shutting the door in a lopsided third period in which the Flyers were outshot 19-9. Bobrovsky made several acrobatic saves to preserve the win, which came after the Flyers nearly blew a 3-0 lead. Mike Richards, Andreas Nodl and James van Riemsdyk scored in the first 26 minutes of play, but the Flyers had to hold off a furious rally by the Panthers before Danny Briere potted an empty-netter. NOTES, QUOTES –By sweeping their two-game set in Florida the Flyers opened up a seven-point cushion atop the Eastern Conference, their largest of the season.

Inside Flyers’ 4-3 shootout win in Tampa

A focal point of recent trade rumors, James van Riemsdyk played like he wanted to remain a Flyer forever with a Gordie Howe hat trick, but it was Brian Boucher’s clutch saves in the shootout that gave the Flyers their first win over Tampa this season after three losses. Boucher stopped six of seven shootout attempts, including four in a row by Vincent Lecavalier, Simon Gagne, Steven Stamkos and Marty St. Louis.
