Flyers acquire Versteeg for 1st rounder

The Flyers announced today that they have acquired 5-10, 182-pound right wing Kris Versteeg from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for a first-round and a third-round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, according to general manager Paul Holmgren. “Kris is an exciting young forward,” Holmgren said. He’s 24 years old and he’ll fit in with our group of players here. He’s a quality forward that can play in a lot of different roles for our hockey team. He can move up and down our lineup

Lavvy: Cup or bust!

By CHUCK GORMLEY Courier-Post Staff VOORHEES Peter Laviolette may not be the king of hyperbole, but when the 46-year-old Flyers coach is asked a point-blank question, he usually answers it head-on. Such was the case Friday when, after running his team through a spirited practice at the Skate Zone, Laviolette appeared as a guest on the Tony Bruno and Harry Mayes Show on 97.5 The Fanatic. Laviolette was asked if he’s viewing this season as a Stanley Cup or bust. “It is for me,” Laviolette told his listening audience

Flyers to face Rookie of Year candidate

By CHUCK GORMLEY Courier-Post Staff VOORHEES Back in November, when he had won 11 of his first 14 starts, Sergei Bobrovsky looked like he might be the first Flyer to ever win a Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year. And while a strong stretch run could put Bobrovsky back in the running, it might be difficult for him to catch a fleet-footed 18-year-old the Flyers will face tonight at the Wells Fargo Center. Already described by one of his teammates as the Justin Bieber of hockey, Jeff Skinner will make his second appearance in Philadelphia tonight when the Carolina Hurricanes make their second stop of a five-game road trip. Through 54 games, the 5-foot-11, 193-pound left wing from Markham, Ontario leads all NHL rookies with 43 points. His 20 goals and 23 assists rank him second on the Hurricanes behind Eric Staal, who seven years ago also came into the NHL as an 18-year-old manchild

Emery signs with Ducks, placed on waivers

Free-agent goaltender Ray Emery has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Anaheim Ducks that will pay him $500,000 if he plays in the NHL and $105,000 if he plays in the AHL. If the Flyers claim Emery they must place him on their NHL roster and pay him $500,000. That means they would need to either carry three goalies (bad idea) or send Bobrovsky to the Phantoms (another bad idea). If Emery clears waivers by noon on Tuesday, he will be assigned to the Syracuse Crunch. He has not played at the pro level since undergoing radical hip reconstruction last April.

Flyers’ Jeff Carter speaks out on Ray Emery

Free-agent goaltender Ray Emery is expected to sign a two-way contract on Monday and I’m told the Anaheim Ducks appear to have the inside track on him. Former junior teammate Jeff Carter has been texting back and forth with Emery in recent weeks and had this to say about the 28-year-old netminder: “He says he feels great and he’s ready to go. We should hear something soon.

Should Flyers sign Ray Emery?

Two summers ago Paul Holmgren rolled the dice on a healthy Ray Emery and lost. Now, according to published reports, Holmgren is considering rolling that same dice on Emery by signing him to a two-way AHL contract. This is the same Ray Emery that last April underwent a radical reconstruction of his right hip.

Inside Flyers’ 3-2 win over Nashville

Ville Leino enjoyed the first two-goal game of his career, scoring both of his goals in the third period, to give the Flyers their first win since the All-Star break. The Flyers also received a goal and two assists from Jeff Carter and saw defenseman Chris Pronger engage in one of his most physical games of the season. “It was a track meet, a fun game to play,” said Carter, who bumped his goal total to 24. NOTES, QUOTES –With 73 points, the Flyers are now tied with the 1973-74 and 1974-75 teams for the third-best record in franchise history after 52 games.
