Shelley invites fan into dressing room

When Haddonfield’s Steven Kemp showed up at the Flyers’ practice rink on Tuesday wearing his dress blues from the United States Naval Academy, he hoped that maybe a player would toss him a puck. Flyers enforcer Jody Shelley did something more, inviting him into the Flyers’ dressing room. “He was wearing his uniform, so I thought I’d invite him in to meet the guys,” Shelley said with a gap-toothed smile. Kemp, 20, watched practice with his girlfriend, Amanda King, but abandoned her without a second thought.

Will Islanders snatch up Leighton?

Is Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton on his way to Long Island? The New York Islanders have until noon today to claim Leighton off waivers and after watching Rick DiPietro go down with a lower body injury Monday night in a 4-1 win over Calgary they might do just that. The Isles traded backup Dwayne Roloson to the Lightning Saturday night for defenseman Ty Wishart. “I can’t speak for the Islanders, but our intent was to get Michael some playing time, not to lose him,” Flyers assistant GM Barry Hanrahan told me this morning. “Our intent is for him to play for the Phantoms.” Leighton helped lead the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals, but back surgery on Oct

Inside the Flyers’ Western road trip

Technically, the Flyers’ longest road trip of the season – five games over 12 days — ends Thursday night when they visit the New Jersey Devils. However, the team returned home Sunday night following an impressive 3-2 win over the Red Wings in Detroit, allowing the players to sleep in their own beds three nights before a quick trip to Newark for the first of back-to-back games against the Devils. The Flyers went 2-2 on their road trip, not bad considering they played their worst defensive hockey of the season in a three-game stretch against the Canucks (a 6-2 loss), the Kings (a 7-4 win) and Ducks (a 5-2 loss). Coach Peter Laviolette rotated all three of his goalies – Brian Boucher, Michael Leighton and Sergei Bobrovsky – in the first three games of the trip but his decision to start Boucher in Detroit spoke volumes

Inside Flyers’ 5-2 loss in Anaheim

A week ago, Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said having three goalies was a good problem to have, as long as all three were playing well. Now that Sergei Bobrovsky, Brian Boucher and Michael Leighton are playing poorly, the Flyers may be close to resolving their crowded crease. The easiest solution is to send Bobrovsky to the AHL Phantoms, where he can play a string of games without looking over his shoulder.
