Leighton says he’s fine, Walker to go on IR?

Michael Leighton told reporters after Monday’s practice that he’s NHL ready and expects top be cleared after being examined on Tuesday. If Leighton is cleared, the FLyers will need to remover a player from their 23-man roster to make room for him and it appears they will place defenseman Matt Walker on their injury list. Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said Walker injured his hip in a game with the Phantoms over the weekend, but said, “I’m not sure” when asked how the injury occurred, leading to some speculation that Holmgren is fabricating Walker’s injury so that he can place him on the injured list, which removes him from the 23-man active roster, making room for Leighton.

Inside Flyers’ 5-4 shootout loss to San Jose

Nothing upsets Peter Laviolette more than having a team that leads the NHL in minor penalties. Unless of course, a flurry of penalties leads to blowing a three-goal lead in the third period. That’s what happened Wednesday night against the San Jose Sharks, when an interference penalty to Jeff Carter and a double-minor for high sticking to Danny Briere led to the Flyers blowing a 4-1 lead en route to a 5-4 shootout loss at home. “The reason we blew the 4-1 lead was because of penalties,” Laviolette said. “They take the flow out of the bench, they kill the game and they can send it in the other direction.

NHL approves rehab extension for Leighton

At some point this month the Flyers will be forced to make Michael Leighton a part of their 23-man roster. Thanks to an appeal by general manager Paul Holmgren and some leniency by the NHL, that decision has been delayed at least one week. The NHL granted the Flyers permission to extend Leighton’s rehab assignment with the Phantoms for an additional two games, meaning he can return to the Phantoms and play two of their three games this weekend when they visit the Syracuse Crunch on Friday, return home to face the Portland Pirates on Saturday, and hit the road to face the Connecticut Whale on Sunday
