More Flyers greats commit to Winter Classic Alumni Game

Photo:

Brian Propp Everyone loves the Winter Classic, so it’s no surprise that more and more past Flyers are committing to play in this season’s alumni game against the New York Rangers. A week after news broke that Eric Lindros plans to take part in the New Year’s Eve afternoon festivities at Citizens Bank Park, other big names are pouring in such as Bob Clarke, Bill Barber, Reggie Leach and Orest Kindrachuk from the Broad Street Bullies 1974-75 back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams, plus more-recent stars like Mark Recchi, John LeClair and Brian Propp. With Lindros and LeClair committed, the Flyers still are hoping Mikael Renberg can attend so that their famed Legion of Doom line can be reunited.

Flyers kick off promotion for annual charity event

Photo:

Lauren Pronger, co-chair for this year’s event, and her husband, Flyers captain Chris Pronger Flyers publicist Rebecca Goodman set the ground rules for a pre-game news conference meant to drum up publicity for the team’s annual fundraiser. Lauren Pronger, wife of Chris, would not be taking questions about her husband missing the Flyers’ last five games with an eye injury. Nobody was going to go there, but Lauren did get a laugh when a Flyers beat writer jokingly mentioned that he’d been called overweight by her sarcastic husband a week earlier.

Sabre suspended for head-butting Voracek

Head-butting Flyers winger Jakub Voracek on Wednesday will cost Buffalo Sabres tough guy Patrick Kaleta, who was suspended on Thursday for 4 games by NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan. “I didn’t even know [Kaleta] hit me in the head to be honest with you,” Voracek I felt a hit and when I saw it on the replay [Thursday] morning, I just found out he head-butted me.” Five minutes into the Flyers’ 3-2 win, Voracek was battling for the puck on the side boards in the Buffalo end when head-butted by Kaleta. Voracek wasn’t injured, but that was insignificant to Shanahan. “The significant factor in this incident is whether the contact is intentional, reckless or accidental,” NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan said in a video review of the hit. “This recent history of ramming his head into the faces of his opponents regardless of whether he is trying to free the puck leads us to believe that this act is intentional,” Shanahan said

Flyers call up Harry Z, Holmstrom with Briere, Read ailing

Danny Briere will miss a second game with an upper-body injury Wednesday night when the Flyers return from a three-day break to play in Buffalo. Rookie forward Matt Read, out the last two days with an upper-body injury, will miss at least the next two. With both absent from practice on Tuesday, the Flyers turned to their AHL team to bring in reinforcements by summoning in rookie forwards Ben Holmstrom and Harry Zolnierczyk from the Adirondack Phantoms. Because the Flyers had next to no available cap space to play, they apparently had to sent defenseman Matt Walker ($1.7 million cap hit) to the Phantoms in order to bring in Holmstrom ($900,000) and Harry Z ($700,000). With these moves, the Flyers have about in $392,000 cap cushion.

Bryzgate here and gone

It definitely was a different day at Skate Zone on Monday because of Bryzgate. First, we were told quote machine Ilya Bryzgalov now only would be available for interviews after games that he started. That didn’t sit well with Flyers beat writers because it violates the NHL CBA. Later, after some of us had some fun with the situation on Twitter that apparently ticked off some Flyers higher-ups (at least one for sure), the Flyers’ new policy changed change. The Philly chapter of the PHWA (Pro hockey writers) went to the national president on this, the Flyers decided to drop their policy and, just like that, all was well in our world

Jagr examines my jar of Jagr peanut butter

Since I’m new to the Courier-Post, I’ll share a little of my past. I grew up 26 miles to the East of Pittsburgh in Jeannette, Pa., and in my younger years when to a lot of Penguins games at the Civic Arena. Not long after moving to the Philly area to cover the Phillies in 1996, my grandmother picked up the hottest new item in the grocery stories. Years earlier, she had bought some Mario Lemieux candy bars. (Mario played a lot better than his chocolate bar tasted.) In 1996, I added a jar of Jaromir Jagr peanut butter to my home office.
