Simmonds sticks up for buddy amid racial slurs

Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds, one of 28 blacks in the NHL this season, wasn’t happy hearing his good buddy Joel Ward was the subject of racial slurs on Twitter after scoring the winnning goal for the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night in Game 7 of their first round series against the Boston Bruins. “Obviously, things get said,” Simmonds said after the Flyers’ practice on Thursday.

Updated Flyers’ playoff scenarios

The Flyers won’t have to play the team that bounced them out of the 2011 playoffs in the second round. They also are guaranteed of missing the club that beat them six times in six tries this season. The Flyers won’t know who they’re playing or whether they’ll have home-ice advance until Thursday night, but six possible second-round opponents was reduced to four on Wednesday night with the Washington Capitals taking out the Bruins in Game 7 of their first-round series with a 2-1 overtime victory in Boston. With the seventh-seeded Caps advancing, the fifth-seeded Flyers won’t be the lowest remaining Eastern Conference seed, so they won’t have to play the top-seeded New York Rangers in the second round

Meszaros practicing, but unsure of return

Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros is back practicing after undergoing knee surgery on March 21, but still is experiencing some soreness from time to time and can’t predict when he might be ready to return. “Just taking it day by day and seeing how it is,” Meszaros said. “Sometimes I have a good day, sometimes I have a bad day, so it depends. Day by day and go from there.

Lavy planning on long playoff run

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette worked on conditioning during Tuesday’s practice with his team two days into a break that could last six days between the first and second NHL playoff rounds. “The biggest thing right now is to make sure we keep moving on the ice,” the coach said. “You’re planning for the long haul. You’re planning to mid-June, and I think it’s real important to keep the guys out there as a unit…I thought we had a really great pace.” Here’s video of Lavy’s media talk after practice:
