Mullen on Flyers’ potent power play

The Flyers set a club record for a playoff series by scoring 12 power-play goals in their first round series against Pittsburgh and their conversation rate was 52.2 percent, by far the best in the NHL. The architect of the power play is assistant coach Joe Mullen, a Hockey Hall of Famer who was great on the power play during his career as a 500-goal scorer. Grossmann out with concussion

The Flyers will be without big defenseman Nick Grossmann tonight for Game 5 of their first-round playoff series with Pittsburgh. Grossmann suffered a concussion in Game 4 on a hit from Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. “He’s a good defensive player and obviously we’re not too happy he’s not playing, but at the end of the day it’s all about your health,” Flyers center Claude Giroux said.

Hulkamania comes to Philly

Remember the Penguins fan who looked and acted like professional wrestling Hulk Hogan when the Flyers had a late-season, late-game fights in Pittsburgh? The Flyers’ first response came that day when left wing Scott Hartnell cupped a hand to the ear ala Hogan, then management topped that in Game 3 in a big way. First, everyone attending received an orange T-shirt with a picture of Hartnell acting like Hogan plus a Hulk-like banana, and the topper came late in the game on the videoboard when Hogan himself delivered a message while ripping off one those Hartnell shirts: “Hey Flyers fans, this is the real Hulk Hogan and I know you’ve been saying your prayers and eating your vitamins. I got one thing to say: Whatcha can do when Flyers mania runs wild on you?” Here’s the Hogan video Flyers fans saw: And here’s how a Canadian television station broadcasting the game showed and described it:

Kubina expected to play Game 2

It’s looking like veteran defenseman Pavel Kubina, benched in Game 1, will be in the Flyers lineup for tonight’s Game 2 due to rookie blueliner Marc-Andre Bourdon sustaining an upper-body injury in Wednesday’s postseason opener. Kubina wouldn’t say for sure that he was a healthy scratch for Game 1, but he had been practicing and dropped a hint when saying, “I do understand it.” Kubina, 35, was acquired in February from Tampa Bay.
