Briere, Grossmann back to practice

Center Danny Briere and defenseman Nick Grossmann returned to practice Monday for the Flyers, who were hard at work at Skate Zone preparing for a first-round playoff series against the Penguins that opens Wednesday in Pittsburgh. Both players were injured by Pittsburgh center Joe Vitale two Saturdays ago … Grossmann was hurt on a knee-on-knee collison while Briere sustained a back injury on a hard check.

Playoff dates, times announced

The NHL announced first-round playoff dates and times Sunday morning, and as expected the Flyers will open in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Game 2 will be playing in Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, then the Flyers will come home for Game 3 at 3 p.m., Sunday and Game 4 at 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday

Flyers lock up Grossmann

The Flyers and defenseman Nick Grossmann fell in love rather quickly. Traded from Dallas to Philly before this season’s trade deadline, Grossmann bypassed on an opportunity to become an unstricted free agent on July 1 by signing a multi-year contract with the Flyers on Friday. Grossmann, 27, is a big, strong blueliner who has helped the Flyers made up for the loss of captain Chris Pronger, who was lost for the season due to post-concussion syndrome in November. The Flyers acquired Grossman on Feb. 13 for two draft picks – a 2012 second-rounder and a 2013 third-rounder

Flyers hand out awards; Giroux team MVP

The Flyers handed out their team awards before Thursday’s regular-season home finale. Below is a portion of a Flyers press release annoucing the winners and award details: Bobby Clarke Trophy (Most Valuable Player) Claude Giroux Giroux was selected by a panel of sportswriters and sportscasters as the Flyers team MVP for the second consecutive year. Giroux will wrap up the season with some of the best offensive numbers for a Flyers player in a dozen years.

Bryz takes part in morning skate, returns tonight

Ilya Bryzgalov will be in back in goal tonight when the Flyers host the New York Rangers after missing three games witih a chip fracture in his right foot. Bryzgalov participated in the Flyers’ morning skate today, his first action since last Friday’s practice. “He looked good,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said.

Simmonds NHL’s No. 1 star of week

Flyers right wing Wayne Simmonds’ painful but rewarding week was noticed by the NHL. Breaking out of a 16-game goalless slump, Simmonds was named the league’s No. 1 start for the week on Monday after scoring five goals and six points in four games, one of his scores deflecting off his face and into the net. Simmonds was bloodied badly and received six or seven stitches running from the bridge of his nose to his right eyebrow, but finished the game and then played again Sunday despite waking up with his eye so swollen that he could barely see
