On Morin, Pronger, Jones & Poile

There seems to be a lot of anguish out there (again) as to the Flyers choosing Samuel Morin with their 11th overall pick in the draft versus say, Ryan Pulock, who HB’s Bill Meltzer felt might have been the second, best all-around d-men out there.

There were a ton of French-Canadian media around Morin and not just because he was from Quebec.

Turns out Canadiens’ general manager Marc Bergevin

They Have to Go Defense, Right?

Nothing should ever surprise me when it comes to the Flyers, but I will be rather shocked if, drafting at No. 11, this weekend, they don’t take a defenseman.

The Flyers are depleted at this position within the organization and as I pointed out last month, they don’t have a single drafted defenseman playing regularly for them over their previous 13 drafts which is a disgrace.

One source, who

Holmgren Talks of Bryzgalov Buyout

Everyone has been waiting for this moment since the season ended: buying out Ilya Bryzgalov.

One of the things Flyers management has been saying since April was that the back=and-forth argument on Bryzgalov was just that – back and forth.

Some in the organization wanted him retained. Afterall, this was club chairman Ed Snider’s goalie, and you can’t blame what happened this season on Bryz.

Farewell To A Classy Flyer

There is a special category for Flyers reserved for those who exhibited the epitome of class on and off the ice.

Danny Briere was one of those player for the Flyers.

I put in right up there with the Watson Brothers, Bob Dailey, Simon Gagne, Mike Knuble and Sean O’Donnell.

Today the Flyers finally acknowledged what all of us have know since the season ended – that the club would exercise

Crazy Day for Flyers Just the Beginning

Kinda crazy day for the Flyers.

For starters, as Eklund wrote earlier, Danny Briere is a definite buyout recipient next week while goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, as I have been saying, remains up in the air.

I reported tonight on CSNPhilly.com that 2 sources say the problem remains the Flyer getting another goalie they really want and feel confident with BEFORE making the Bryz decision.

They need

Flyers Going Up New Streit

So the Flyers now own Mark Streit’s rights.

I know people talk about the entire Dan Hamhuis rights’ debacle but that was because the Flyers didn’t believe the rumors he never wanted to play in Philly. They were true as the club found out.

Streit wants to be a Flyer. Which means he will sign. I’ll bet the few Canadian dollars I have left from the last Ottawa trip that Flyers GM Paul Holmgre

Outdoor Hockey at Beaver Stadium

Had a talk with a Flyers official recently about the NHL’s attempt to water down a very prized package – the Winter Classic.

I was and remain dead set against the league “showcasing” 6 outdoor games next season, starting with the Winter Classic and then moving around North America.

I’m surprised that NBC would agree to it, money, notwithstanding. I feel that multiple outdoor hockey takes a

Pre-game Talk in Boston

Needless to say, the Penguins need a little 1991 luck tonight in Game 3 against the Boston Bruins in Beantown.

Down 0-2 in the series, the last time they came back to win against these same Bruins when down 0-2 was ’91 when they won their first Stanley Cup.

Erasing turnovers, especially from their elite players, will be vital tonight. Kris Letang and James Neal are both -5 in the series. Sid

Sutter and Lombardi on the Series

Readers don’t often get to witness pressers in person.

Darryl Sutter has always been one of the more interesting “quotes” at press conferences, whether before, after or during a series.

Courtesy of ASAP Stats and the NHL, here’s Friday’s transcript involving Sutter and general manager Dean Lombardi as the Kings face Chicago today in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals:
