On Compete, Mason, Bryz, Et Al

I’ve seen more than my fair share of unusual things in hockey and other sports since 1971 when I first starting covering sports for a newspaper.

I was telling Peter Laviolette today on my phone that his club is playing better as true underdogs with a depleted roster than they were when healthy.

When some of the players suggested early last week and it was back by Lavy who said, “we should go

Snider Talks

People want to know what Flyers chairman Ed Snider said after Saturday’s “Walk Together Forever” statue unveiling.

Eklund is going to write his own thoughts on this but here is the transcript for you to judge yourself.

This interview was with the Flyers beat writers only after the ceremony:

How exciting is it for you that the Broad Street Bullies statue has come to fruition?

Lack of Compete … Again

Every time you feel the Flyers have hit rock bottom, they find an even deeper sink hole to fall into.

Every time they talk about being ready to play in a “must” win situation, they seem unprepared.

Every time you hope they can build off a win or a point gained in an overtime or shootout loss, it gets wasted.

How can a team give such a lame performance to open a five-game homestand tha

Day 2 of Flyer practice post-Tampa Bay mortem …

And it looks like another double-down day. Meaning two sheets of ice, a double practice right into Saturday before the club leaves for Pittsburgh late Saturday afternoon.

Not much has changed since the 4-2 loss in Tampa. The Flyers remain 5 points back but now have slipped to 14th place in the Eastern Conference.

Everything I am hearing w

Big Night for Flyers, Timonen

As much as the Flyers have had a difficult time winning games and sometimes, even looking competitive, here in Tampa Bay, they have a couple of things going for them tonight against the Lightning.

1- They’re coming an emotional 2-1 shootout win over the Devils.

2- They are 7-3-1 against the Southeast Division this season.

3- The Bolts are slumping worse than them – 3-7 in their last 10 as

Who’s Kidding Whom?

There’s so much going on within the dynamics of the Flyers, it’s almost impossible to single out any, other thing as being more important than the other.

The goalie, who is exhausted and who’s play has dropped considerably since Feb. 7, calls out the team, then says 2 losses to the Devils this week and the team is “done” for the playoffs.

The young captain, who is largely going by the book

Quiet Before the Storm?

Part of the discussion at lunch today in Newark concerned whether these two games against the Devils really are the be-all, end-all for the FLyers to make the playoffs.

I wrote on CSNPhilly.com this week that I feel the Flyers have to win 16 games to get to 57 points and a playoff spot.

Today, Eddie Olczyk told me he had done some calculating and came up with the same thing – 16 wins gets t

Shut Out In Points 3 Times

Just a shocking, incredibly disappointing or should they read disappearing performance from the Flyers in Boston today.

I know the Bruins were 3-0 in matinee games, but the Flyers rolled over after the opening period.

So, no points against the Rangers, Penguins or Bruins. Shut out!

It seemed like we packed it in, Scott Hartnell told me when quizzed on the lack of respons

HUMONGOUS Week Ahead for Flyers

Been a while since the Flyers got to Carnival Sunday having WON the day before.

They almost always lose the day before the Flyers’ Wives Fight for Lives Carnival. Almost a given.

Peter Laviolette doesn’t believe in historical relevancy but there is such when it comes to the Flyers and their “third” month of the schedule. Usually, that is December and it’s a month that more often than not, t

Does This Move Improve Flyers’ Chances?

I don’t think this is the end to the Flyers wheeling ‘n dealing.

When the Simon Gagne deal was first announced I didn’t get it b/c Gagne wasn’t playing, wasn’t scoring, etc.

Now, had GM Paul Holmgren has been candid with the media and told us after the game that Tye McGinn had an injury or had he said it was bad on Tuesday at practice, then this would have made sense.

But Gagne to simply
