A Deserving Honor

Jakub Voracek deserves being named NHL No. 1 Star of the Week.

His 12 points over the last 5 games have given the Flyers a lift and catapulted him among the NHL scoring leaders with 22 points.

As Bill Meltzer has pointed out, he’s become a point-a-game players, something both Columbus and the Flyers always believed was within him.

John Boruk and I were discussing today how Voracek still

It’s Penguin Time Again

Ilya Bryzgalov has given the Flyers a chance to win every game this season.

I also believe that he and he alone has given the defense a chance to get its act together and the penalty kill a chance to do it, as well.

The PK has made huge strides in the last two weeks. It’s killed off 21 of 21 opponent power plays over the past six games.

The big test for Brzy and the PK units comes on We

Chasing the Pack

Jersey, Montreal and Pittsburgh.

Three teams the Flyers have been chasing since their 0-3 start in January.

Three chances for the Flyers to finally get above the 10th seed and into a playoff position.

Because of the Conference-only play this lockout-shortened season, it’s almost impossible to make up ground on some clubs unless you are winning all the points.

It’s not like having the D

Don’t Look For Simmonds Tonight

Wayne Simmonds is “doubtful” for tonight’s game against Florida, according to GM Paul Holmgren.

Actually, it makes sense not to play him. Simmonds is recovering from a concussion – his first of this season.

Recovery time is a minimum of 7 days for a first concussion. Tonight would be 7 days.

So far, he has not had a practice with contact. You simply can’t put a player into a lineup off

Go Get Iginla

It’s time for Flyers GM Paul Holmgren to make a move for this underachieving, struggling team that he himself is responsible for it’s slow start.

The Flyers need some veteran scoring help. Someone is not going to cost them their future.

The fans want Bobby Ryan but the FLyers could have had him any number of times last summer and chose to look away realizing the price was far too h igh.

Lame Excuses

It’s not like Peter Laviolette or even his player to use excuses for losing.

You can come up with a couple of easy reasons why the FLyers were going to lose in Tampa Bay, starting with back to back games and finishing with 6 games in 9 days.

Or how about this: The Lightning right now is a better team? Period.

What is starting to bother me, however, is that the players AND the coach are s

Hartnell Has Broken Bone

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren confirms that Scott Hartnell has a broken metatarsal in his left foot.

He could miss up to 2 months. Holmgren said they are looking around.

What about Mike Knuble? Won’t cost them much and probably has something left in his stick.

We’ll have more from Holmgren on CSNPhilly.com:

Hartnell Injured; Schenn Suspended

From bad to worse … and with the New York Rangers coming to town, too.

As I suspected when coach Peter Laviolette and GM Paul Holmgren avoided questions today, Scott Hartnell is out indefinitely with a left foot injury.

I am guessing it’s fractured, the result of being hit by a shot from Kimmo Timonen in the third period of Tuesday’s 3-0 loss at New Jersey.

Add to that, Brayden Schenn d

Poor Judgment Equals Big Goal

Lotta very unhappy faces among the Flyers coaching and management staff in Buffalo on Sunday afternoon as the Flyers completed a wipeout weekend with consecutive losses.

Five on five, I don’t feel the Flyers have played that badly. I also feel if you look at Ilya Bryzgalov’s numbers after two games it’s not reflected just how good he has played.

I like the fact he openly admitted he has pl

Say Hi to Laughton

Get used to the name Scott Laughton.

The rookie who played junior for Oshawa will be on the Flyers roster when it is released later today.

Here’s the transcript, courtesy of the Flyers, from his interview after THUR night’s practice:

Flyers center Scott Laughton

What was it like playing in front of the fans at practice tonight?

“It was kind of like a game-like atmosphere and it
