Every now and then, something happens in a Flyers dressing room that surprises me. Like … Sean Couturier having some good things to say about himself, the penalty kill, the team, etc. Most rookies are notoriously bad interviews. We all knew that Simon Gagne had enormous talent when he came in the NHL in 1998.

Ilya Bryzgalov goes tonight against the Minnesota Wild. He going to get the majority of starts in the second half, according to coach Peter Laviolette, while goalie coach Jeff Reese told me on MOnday he wants Bryz to play less than 60 games.

You’ve already seen Eklund’s post on James van Riemsdyk. Three Flyers said today at the morning skate that the hit from Bobby Butler in the FIRST Ottawa game represents the initial head shot on JVR. There were subsequent hits in the games that followed, but this is likely the root cause.

There are not many things Scott Hartnell and I agree on. He likes to get edgy with me and I like to reciprocate. In the absence of Chris Pronger, Hartsy is the only guy in the dressing room to spar with these days. But I truly believe he got royally shafted today when the NHL announced the remainder of its All-Star Team

Though the Flyers had an “OFF” today it was anything but. Peter Laviolette held class at the team’s hotel in Raleigh in one of the ball rooms. They watched film. Mostly, Lavy told me, they watched clips of the mistakes they made against Ottawa. When I walked out of Scotiabank Place last night with Bruce Garrioch, I said to another writer, ‘we’ll see you in the playoffs.’ I got this lump

That the Flyers didn’t have another Friday Night Massacre where they announced bad news late into the evening was a relief, as it pertained to defenseman Kimmo Timonen. That there was nothing to announce tells us that x-rays/MRIs were negative on the left hand injury he suffered during the Winter Classic.. We thought something happened in the first period against Chicago but as it turned o

On Tuesday, Peter Laviolette talked about the virtues of using James van Riemsdyk on the top line in place of Jaromir Jagr. I didn’t really buy it, given that Jakub Voracek looked better there than JVR during the Winter Classic and because JVR hasn’t earned it, but I also knew the coaching staff is desperate to get the kid going again. Today, reasoning stepped in and Matt Read was up there o

The other day, I was speaking to a Comcast executive who said to me, “Peter Laviolette has the world’s biggest b—-.” I was making the case as to why Sergei Bobrovsky should start the Winter Classic and why I felt that Lavy would make that decision. Like Ken Hitchcock, there are certain mannerisms about Laviolette that are entirely predictable, just as a full moon. He rewards good play

I don’t feel it’s difficult to get a good read on Flyers coach Peter Laviolette. He’s pretty consistent on most things. For instance, he never announces his goalies until day of game. He NEVER talks about injuries. He always refers those questions “to the GM.” If a player were decapitated at center ice in full view of 18,000 people, Lavy would defer to Paul Holmgren as to that player’s stat
