Sense a Trade is Coming

The Flyers made a bunch of roster moves on Saturday aimed at clearing cap space and helping the cause of one, Scott Laughton.

First, they sent Chris VandeVelde to the Phantoms. Then then placed Bruno Gervais and surprisingly, Adam Hall, on waivers.

What this does is clear a path for Laughton to remain here past his 9 games in October and actually be on the roster the entire season.

Surprise: Raffl Goes to the Phantoms

Never a dull moment with the Flyers.

Bill Meltzer and I both felt that Michael Raffl had earned a spot on the roster once Tye McGinn went back to the Phantoms.

We both felt even after Thursday’s mind-numbing loss in New Jersey that nothing had changed.

Friday afternoon, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren surprised us by sending Raffl to the Phantoms and keeping Chris VandeVelde. What Bill said back

Voracek Update

Quick update here …

Jakub Voracek did not practice with the team on Wednesday at Wells Fargo Center while Wayne Simmonds, did.

Simmonds missed a couple practices and Tuesday’s 2-1 loss against the Devils with the flu. He is now recovered.

Vinny Lecavalier told me late Tuesday he is still having some lingering effects from that same flu bug but has not missed anything important because

Don’t Rush Giroux Back

Judging from the way Claude Giroux was talking Monday after practice at Wells Fargo Center, I would say the chances of him playing tonight against the Devils, is 50/50 – at best.

There’s been a lot of chatter on the internet since he spoke yesterday from fans begging, almost pleading, for common sense to kick in and not allow Giroux to play.

I concur. There is absolutely no need to rush him

Read Re-Signed

Last week in Philadelphia, FLyers winger Matt Read talked about pending free agency and made it sound rather convincing that he was prepared to do that in July of 2014.

Friday night, in yet another Paul Holmgren “Friday Night Bomb,” the Flyers general manager announced the club had re-signed him to a 4-year deal worth $14.5 million with an annual cap hit of $3.625 million.

Again, as I get

The Battle for Left Wing

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that if Scott Laughton was going to make the Flyers, he would have to do on the merits of playing center – not on the wing.

Today in Lake Placid, coach Peter Laviolette told reporters just that: Laughton is a natural centerman, has only ever played the position, and has to fit there to stick around.

Which is the way it has to be given he is just 19-years-old

What’s the Plan Here?

It doesn’t surprise me that Michael Raffl or Samuel Morin will be at Lake Placid the next four days as the Flyers escape town for some team bonding and such.

What does surprise is that Hal Gill was going. He has looked slow in two pre-season games and continues to be a longshot to make the roster off a tryout.

Unless … the FLyers are going to make a series of roster/cap moves at the end of

First Week Look Back

An interesting week for concussions as they pertain to the Flyers:

1) Mark Alt gets one in Virginia during a rookie game against the Washington Caps rooks but is fine two days later and goes through rest of camp without a hitch;

2) Chris Pronger confirms that while he may look and seem better, he is still dogged by headaches and balance issues if he does anything on the ice other than move i

Holmgren Explain’s Cleary End Game

Clearly, this is not how the Flyers envisioned things would turn out.

But if you go by public opinion, fans seem very happy that Dan Cleary deep-sixed the Flyers tryout offer and instead stuck around Detroit for two days when he was supposed to be in Philly, before finally signing a 1-year deal for a LOT less than what the FLyers generously over-offered him on a 3-year deal.

Cleary Over Youth? Your Call

There’s a lot to like about adding a Dan Cleary to your roster.

Veteran experience. A Cup. A “glue guy” as GM Kenny Holland would call him.

But here’s the rub for Flyers fans as I read the Twitter and internet comments: At age 34, is a three-year deal a year too long?

Another young Flyer player won’t be on the roster. Personally, I would have preferred giving him a 1-year contract and
