The Flyers made a bunch of roster moves on Saturday aimed at clearing cap space and helping the cause of one, Scott Laughton.

First, they sent Chris VandeVelde to the Phantoms. Then then placed Bruno Gervais and surprisingly, Adam Hall, on waivers.

What this does is clear a path for Laughton to remain here past his 9 games in October and actually be on the roster the entire season.

Never a dull moment with the Flyers.

Bill Meltzer and I both felt that Michael Raffl had earned a spot on the roster once Tye McGinn went back to the Phantoms.

We both felt even after Thursday’s mind-numbing loss in New Jersey that nothing had changed.

Quick update here …

Jakub Voracek did not practice with the team on Wednesday at Wells Fargo Center while Wayne Simmonds, did.

Simmonds missed a couple practices and Tuesday’s 2-1 loss against the Devils with the flu. He is now recovered.

Judging from the way Claude Giroux was talking Monday after practice at Wells Fargo Center, I would say the chances of him playing tonight against the Devils, is 50/50 – at best.

There’s been a lot of chatter on the internet since he spoke yesterday from fans begging, almost pleading, for common sense to kick in and not allow Giroux to play.

Last week in Philadelphia, FLyers winger Matt Read talked about pending free agency and made it sound rather convincing that he was prepared to do that in July of 2014.

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that if Scott Laughton was going to make the Flyers, he would have to do on the merits of playing center – not on the wing.

Today in Lake Placid, coach Peter Laviolette told reporters just that: Laughton is a natural centerman, has only ever played the position, and has to fit there to stick around.

It doesn’t surprise me that Michael Raffl or Samuel Morin will be at Lake Placid the next four days as the Flyers escape town for some team bonding and such.

What does surprise is that Hal Gill was going. He has looked slow in two pre-season games and continues to be a longshot to make the roster off a tryout.

Clearly, this is not how the Flyers envisioned things would turn out.

But if you go by public opinion, fans seem very happy that Dan Cleary deep-sixed the Flyers tryout offer and instead stuck around Detroit for two days when he was supposed to be in Philly, before finally signing a 1-year deal for a LOT less than what the FLyers generously over-offered him on a 3-year deal.
