Flyers 5-3 over Bruins

The Flyers beat the Bruins in Boston 5-3.
Forsberg scored two goals, Gagne, Desjardins and Handzus (empty net) each had one.
Forsberg left after the third period with a groin strain. Hitchcock says he sat Forsberg for precautionary reasons and he should be able to play tomorrow.
Kapanen played his first game this year logging over 16 minutes of ice time. Brashear took a shot from Richards near his eye and required several stitches.
Although the Flyers did not play like a Stanley Cup contending team, they did win and also improved in a couple areas they have been struggling in. The Flyers won 57% of face offs. The larger problem has been the penalty kill. The Flyers killed off all four Boston powerplays. Two games in a row without giving up a powerplay goal.
Gagne, Forsberg, Nickulas were the three stars.
Nittymaki got the start in goal which means Esche should play tomorrow.
Richards who was expected to sit out with a bruised wrist, played. Sharp was a healthy scratch.

Flyers play the Islanders Saturday afternoon in Philly at 2.

Black Friday – Flyers at Boston

Almost missed this one. The Flyers play the Bruins in Boston today at noon.
Esche looks to be a more focused and calm goaltender after a discussion with Hitchcock. Kapanen will play his first game of the season.
The Flyers will be without Richards with a sprained wrist, Seidenberg with a broken wrist, Savage with a sprained knee and Primeau with a concussion.

Flyers lead the season series 1-0, beating Boston 4-3 OT in Philly.

Lightning over Flyers 4-2

The Flyers lost to the Lighting for the second time this season Tuesday night 4-2.
Umberger picked up his first NHL goal, Sim scored the other one on a power play. A couple positives for the Flyers is killing both penalty kills successfully and wining majority of the face-offs. That’s about it. The Flyers were outplayed out and hustled in their own arena.

“They’re a championship team because they compete very hard for the puck on a consistent basis. We still have players who go in fits and starts in that area. On the third goal, we got out competed four times on a loose puck and it ended up in our net. And it was the same thing on the fourth goal.” – Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said.

Indeed.

The last regulation loss at home was opening night against the Rangers. Forsberg had a five game point streak snapped. Taylor, Dimaio and Handzus were the three stars.
Forsberg played his 600 game, which is only a big deal to him. NHL players after playing 600 games don’t have to share a hotel room on the road. Forward Pat Kavanagh was called up from the Phantoms and saw some ice time. Desjardins made his return from being out with a concussion. He ended up with 23 minutes of ice time.
The Flyers were without Savage, Seidenberg, Richards, Primeau and Kapanen.

I am beginning to wonder whether the Lighting are the new Devils for the Flyers. In years past the Flyers always had to go thru the Devils, most of the time being unsuccessful. Recently the Flyers have beaten the ‘curse’. Going back to last years playoffs and the two games this year it looks like the Flyers have another team them must figure out. Hopefully it won’t take them as long as it took finally beating the Devils.

Flers vs Lightning Nov 22

The Philadelphia Flyers play the Stanley Cup Champions Tampa Bay Lightning tonight in Philadelphia.
Tampa Bay will be looking for their fourth win in five games. The Lightning leads the season series 1-0 beating the Flyers 5-2 back on Nov 14. Martin St. Louis will see the Flyers the first time this season. Tampa Bay is coming off a 5-2 win against Carolina on Sunday. The Flyers are coming off a 6-3 win against Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Primeau, Seidenberg, Savage and Kapanen will be scratched because of injury.

Jiri Fischer is ok

Red Wings spokesman John Hahn said “He’s breathing on his own, he’s responsive. It looks like he’s going to be OK.”

Sometimes in life stuff happens that put things in perspective. A lot of times we get caught up in the moment, so involved in things, especially with hockey. Getting pissed at the refs, getting so mad when your team doesn’t do well, you want to throw something. Then in a flash we are brought back to earth and we realize how fragile and precious life is.
I think this happened tonight in Detroit. Jiri Fischer collapsed on Detroit’s bench after suffering a seizure during the first period. The medical staff administered CPR on him and later was taken to a local hospital.
Red Wings spokesman John Hahn said “He’s breathing on his own, he’s responsive. It looks like he’s going to be OK.”
The game was called and I don’t believe really anyone cared.
They just wanted Jiri to be ok.

Injury Update Nov 21

The Good

Sami Kapanen will be back in the lineup on Saturday against the Islanders. Kapanen had surgery back in September to repair torn cartilage in his right shoulder.
Eric Desjardins will return Tuesday against Tampa Bay. Desjardins took an elbow to the head from Chris Clark of the Capitals on November 5 which resulted in a concussion. Clark was also fined $2,000 for the elbow.
Mike Richards fell into the boards awkwardly, jamming his right wrist. X-rays came back negative and is probable for Tuesdays game.

With Stevenson, Desjardins and Kapanen back, the penalty kill is suppose to improve. At least that’s what they say.

The Bad

Dennis Seidenberg took a slash to his hands in Pittsburgh which resulted in a broken bone in his right hand. He is expected to miss 2 to 3 weeks.
Brian Savage has a grade one MCL sprain of his knee. He is expected to miss 10 days to two weeks.

The Ugly

Captian Keith Primeau is still MIA with concussion symptoms. Primeau and his busy eyes have no date set to comeback.
If I had to guess, I’m thinking January.

Unhappy Larmer leaves post with NHLPA

The Players Association seems to be going thru some turmoil. Steve Larmer voiced his opinion with the selection of Ted Saskin as the NHLPA Executive Director by resigning. I don’t know much about NHLPA internal politics, but considering that the ‘final final’ draft of the agreed to CBA has not been released yet, this can not be good for the NHLPA.
Steve Larmer’s resignation letter

“I have worked for seven years at the NHLPA. For six of those years I am proud to say I worked for one of the most powerful organizations in pro sports but what has happened over the last nine months and more so in the last 90 days has led me to make a tough decision. I feel I must resign. I am resigning because this organization has taken a giant step backwards, back to the days of Eagleson where a select few made decisions for the group.

Where there has been misinformation and denial of information to the players that is totally disrespectful. This is something that I, and many others, worked so hard to get rid of in our organization and it has all returned. This is wrong. Honesty and transparency should be the foundation of this organization and that has been torn away.

I remember the Eagleson days when the PA was ruled by the minority and the majority was kept in the dark. Our group of players challenged it, demanded change and received it. We all vowed that those days would not return but low and behold they have.

For the past seven years I have traveled and spoken to many players. My role was to challenge them to ask questions, get answers so they could make both personal and collective decisions. To let them know that this is there organization. Without the right information it is tough to make decisions, lately the guys are having trouble getting answers to their questions.

What has taken place since Bob was let go is unacceptable. No matter how you look at it it shows a total disregard for all of the players. An organization has to be governed by its Constitution and Bylaws. When it is not it becomes self-serving.

When Bob was asked to step down in late July some members of the executive committee hired Ted right away. They did so relying on information given to them by Ted. They did not follow the constitution or the bylaws. They were misled and made a wrong decision. A small group of players does not have the authority to do what they do, the full board should have been consulted prior to making any decisions.

When a few players got wind of what was going and started to ask questions a conference call was set up to vote Ted in. Without prior information as to what the call was about after two hours a vote was held on whether or not to vote, it was 17 to 17. The called should have ended there, a warning to proceed slowly and do it right. Two hours later Ted was voted in but some how this did not seem right, not even to Ted. Then we have the “not so secret ballot vote” were there is some active soliciting of these votes taking place. This is totally wrong once again.

I was around during the Eagleson days and this is reminds me of how ‘Eagle’ operated. The Constitution and bylaws are there to protect the organization from any of this happening. This should have been dealt with right away and because it hasn’t leads me to believe that everyone thinks it will go away and everything will be all right. What is even more disheartening is that those on the executive committee refuse to do what’s right so as an organization we can begin the healing process.

Ted is relying on the players playing the game and not paying attention to a most important matter that could affect many players for many years going forward.

We are a tattered union to say the least and it will take along time for the players to trust those that are left to run the PA. I had a wonderful time working for all of the players, the best group of athletes anywhere. I have had the chance to learn a great many things from a lot of people in the last 7 years working at the PA and will without a doubt miss everyone. I feel that under the present conditions with all that is happening I cannot be associated with what is going on.”

Flyers over Penquins 6-3

The Flyers stopped a 3 game losing streak beating the Penguins 6-3 in Pittsburgh. The Penguins fans love Hatcher, booing him every time he touched the puck which was quite funny. Gagne scored twice(one shorthanded) with Richards, Carter, Handzus and Knuble(empty net) each adding a goal.
Brian Savage suffered some sort of knee injury missing the third period.

“Nitty was really good. He was really good when we needed him. We knew Pittsburgh was going to come out. You look at back-to-back games, they are hard to play when the other team is sitting there and waiting. For us to get three of four points this weekend, that is really good news.” Hitchcock

Like we really need another goalie controversy, but I really like Nittymaki’s style better than Esche’s in net. Sometimes Esche looks like he is just scrambling around too much.

Gagne, Richards and Forsberg were the three stars.

Thrashers over Flyers 6-5 OT

The Flyers have lost three straight games with their loss last night to the Thrashers 6-5 in overtime.
That game had the worse officiating I have seen in a very long time. On average you get one bad call per game, but usually it either doesn’t affect the games outcome or another bad call goes the other way and it usually evens out. This was not the case last night. What made the soft calls, the bad calls, and the no calls so bad was that it clearly affected the outcome. The no call on Gagne being pulled down by two Thrashers while he entered their zone with an empty net. The incredibly soft hooking call on Hatcher that gave the Thrashers a 6 on 3 with two minutes left in the game. The crosschecking penalty on Forsberg who was holding his stick with one hand, with his stick sticking straight up in the air. The no call on the Thrashers for punching Brashear in the back of the head and tackling him while he had control of the puck in front of the Thrashers net. I wonder who the ref’s Bookie is, that is how bad the officiating looked. It looked like they were purposely influencing the game. What a load of crap.

“You know what happens if I say the wrong thing. You know how I feel about that stuff, how I feel about going down five-on-three with a call like that. You know that stuff. You know how we feel about the non-call on Gagne.” – Ken Hitchcock.

With all that being said, the Flyers have plenty of blame to share for the loss. They played poorly in the first period being out shot 17-8. Brashear took 6 minutes in penalties the first period, but that really doesn’t bother me. Being the tough guy he is expected to have very physical play. He played better last night then he has in awhile. The first period play, giving up 4 power play goals on 11 penalties and Esche’s less then stellar performance in goal cost the Flyers the game. Because of injuries, the Thrashers started their fifth goalie of the season Michael Garnett, who last year was the backup goalie for their AHL team.
Radivojevic who was suppose to sit tonight with Savage getting the start, scored two of the Flyers goals. Derian Hatcher scored on a breakaway. Yeah that’s right, I thought I would never see that. Coming out the penalty box Hatcher somehow someway was able to beat the Thrashers defense into the zone and score on the breakaway. Handzus and Gagne scored the other two goals.

Kovalchuck, Radivojevic and Hatcher were the three stars.

Two comments I need to make about Chris Cuthbert and Glenn Healy, TSN commentators for the game.
The first about Brashear, after receiving his third minor penalty in the first period, one of those two stated quite obnoxiously that Hitchcock would sit Brashear the rest of the game. Which wasn’t the case, Brashear saw five more shifts for a couple reasons. One being he brings energy and size to the ice Atlanta has a hard time handling. The other reason was a couple of those penalties he took were rather weak.
Second they referred the Flyers several times as a one line team? Just shutdown the Forsberg line and you shutdown the Flyers. Out of the 5 goals scored, only one came from that line. Doesn’t seem like a one line team to me. That’s because they aren’t. Just because the Forsberg line is about the most dominate in the NHL right now doesn’t mean the other lines don’t contribute offensively.

Nov18 Flyers vs Thrashers

The Flyers play Thrashers at home tonight. Esche will get the start in goal tonight.
Branko Radivojevic is slated to be a healthy scratch tonight with Brian Savage getting the play time. Flyers lead the season series 1-0, beating Atlanta 5-3 on November 5.
