According to Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin eight of the injuries requiring surgery originally occurred while the players were with different organizations. Are we talking other NHL teams? Gauthier, Savage, Rathje, Hatcher, Stevenson and Forsberg are the only players not with the Flyers organization last year. That’s 6, who are the other 2? Were they injured playing in the Olympics? (As I have said before they shouldn’t be playing in.) Or were they injured last year playing in Europe or in the minors with the lockout? If so why weren’t these injuries noticed last September? The Flyers organization has really stood behind their trainers which they should do up to a point but I think we are at that point if not passed it.
Looking at the amount of surgeries and the countless groin/lower abdomen injuries this year one has to take a serious look at how the training staff is handling the player’s health. I am not calling for heads to roll, but how the players health is managed has to be looked at thoroughly and if need be overhauled.

Handzus surgery successful

Michal Handzus underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder and a partial tear of the bicep.

Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin – “Michal had successful surgery on his left shoulder yesterday at Hahnemann Hospital performed by Dr. Peter DeLuca. We expect Michal to be back with full workouts in about eight-to-10 weeks. He will actually start rehabbing with us today at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ.

“The procedure that was performed consisted of the bankart repair and a superior labral repair. He also had some fraying of his bicep tendon that the doctor debrided. The doctor felt the repairs went really well and we feel that Michal is going to progress very smoothly.”

Flyers under the knife

Injuries throughout this year have been a heavy burden on the Flyers. A burden I think caused them to lose the series against Buffalo, but now the season is over and its time to get them fixed.

Peter Forsberg will most likely have ankle surgery which could possibly cause him to miss some time beginning of next season.

Michal Handzus, Branko Radivojevic and Donald Brashear all will have surgery on their left shoulders.

Sami Kapanen will have surgey on his right shoulder.

Turner Stevenson and Derian Hatcher will have surgery on their right knees.

Mike Rathje at some point will have surgery on his hip.

A review of this years injuries. This is only from THIS year.

Mike Knuble – None, only Flyer to play all 82 games.
Jeff Carter – Missed 1 game after taking a puck to the ear.
Mike Richards – Missed 1 game with sprained wrist, 2 games with head injury.
Mike Rathje – Missed 3 games with groin injury, also torn labrum in his right hip.
Derian Hatcher – Missed 2 games bruised knee, also missed first 3 games serving suspension.
Donald Brashear – Missed 5 games with shoulder injury, also suspended one game.
Michal Handzus – Missed 8 games with shoulder injury.
Simon Gagne – Missed 5 games with groin injury, missed 1 game with flu, missed 3 games bruised knee.
Brian Savage – Missed 11 games with knee injury.
Branko Radivojevic – Missed 8 games with sprained ankle.
Peter Forsberg – Missed 21 games with groin injury, missed 1 game with knee injury.
Joni Pitkanen – Missed 21 with torn abdominal muscle, missed 2 games with groin injury.
Sami Kapanen – Missed 22 games with shoulder injury, missed 1 game with flu.
Freddy Meyer – Missed 16 games with broken leg.
Peter Nedved – After being traded to the Flyers missed 7 games with groin injury.
Kim Johnsson – Missed 1 game with groin injury, missed 34 games with concussion. Also missed playoffs
Chris Therien – Missed 5 games with back injury, missed 28 games with concussion. Also missed playoffs
Eric Desjardins – Missed 28 games with shoulder injury, missed 8 games with concussion.
Turner Stevenson – Missed 38 games with hip injury.
Keith Primeau – Missed 73 games with concussion. Also missed playoffs
Ryan Ready – Missed 21 games with groin injury.

388 man games missed to injury nothing to sneeze at.

Campbell’s hit on Umberger

For those few that haven’t seen it yet.
Brian Campbell hit on R.J. Umberger in the first overtime of Game 1 of the Flyers-Sabrese series.

Umberger left the game and was expected in game 2, but failed his neuro-psychological baseline test. He has a broken nose, a black eye and suffered a minor concussion.

Umberger – “All of my motor skills testing was fine, which explains why I was able to practice with no problem. But they said I was well below on my memory testing.”

He will be tested again before game 3.

Primeau Continuing to Practice; Will Not Play

Flyers center Keith Primeau continued to practice with the team on Friday, but will not attempt to come back for the playoffs.

Below are Primeau’s comments made after practice.

How did you feel today?
Keith Primeau: “Not bad. Well enough again to participate in practice but no real consistency in how I feel so I just continue to plug on.”

Where are you on a daily basis?

KP: “My afternoons end up being pretty good. The first thing in the morning when I wake up and when I first get on the ice and that first part of practice I guess I just get comfortable and work my way through it. Today is not a great day for me, but I’ll rest this afternoon and try again tomorrow.”

Will you try to play at all?
KP: “No. I can’t. It’s just too dangerous. Besides that, when I took on this challenge I promised my family that I wouldn’t play unless I was 100 percent. I just don’t think I’m capable unless I’m 100 percent, either. I’m aware of it, and if I’m aware of it that means it’s not yet right.”

Do the Flyers have little to no leadership outside of Primeau that it benefits the team to have him practice with them even though he says he will NOT be attempting a come back in the playoffs?
Or does he see the writing on the wall that the Flyers won’t go far at all on the playoffs and it’s not worth the risk?
If the Flyers do make it to the Finals which is over a month away, will he give it a shot?
Is he saying what his family wants to hear and also taking the pressure off of him at the same time?
We will know within a month or so.

Keith Primeau skates with team

Flyers center Keith Primeau skated with the team on Monday morning while recovering from a concussion. Primeau still does not plan on playing until September at the earliest, he said.

He talks with the media after practice, the audio can be found here.

I was surprised to see this now, Primeau skating with the team. And yes, he said his goal is to return for the beginning of next season, but let’s read between the lines.

get my feet wet, work myself in slowly, feel better than I have, this a huge hurdle, I wasn’t any worse for wear after the little bit of contact I had was good

I think that last statement is huge. He has started practicing with the team with a little bit of contact. So what does all this mean? I do think that until Primeau is absolutely ready to play he won’t be giving any timelines. So if he decides he ready to go on a Tuesday, then we won’t hear about it until that Tuesday, whether it be this season or next. Part of this has to be how slow his recover has been, another part could be how much pressure the media puts on the situation which would be a distraction for the team.
Another part of this could be the salary cap issue. Hypothetically say he is ready to come back I don’t think there is enough room under the cap for that to happen without moving some people. So he ‘cant play’ until playoff time when the cap isn’t an issue.

One thing to watch is if Primeau continues to practice with the team and with what level of intensity. This might be hard to judge since there are only 3 practice days left for the regular season the 12th, 14th and 17th.

I can’t help to think about when another former Flyer captain recovering from a concussion came back during the playoffs back in 2000 only to sustain another concussion. I hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

Forsberg nursing left groin problem

As the groin turns seems to be the Flyers story this year and it is back. Peter Forsberg sat out Thursday’s practice with a left groin problem.

“I’ve had problems with the left groin all year, but it’s not exactly the same spot,” said Forsberg.

Forsberg will skate tomorrow to see how if feels.
Petr Nedved who has missed 2 games with a groin injury will do the same.

I doubt either will play which would give Ryan Potulny a chance at his first NHL start. I say start the guy. If the injuries continue he will be needed.

So far this year Flyers with groin type injuries include…
Peter Forsberg
Petr Nedved
Joni Pitkanen
Robert Esche
Ryan Ready
Simon Gagne
Kim Johnsson
Brian Savage

Forsberg Visits With Foot Specialist

Peter Forsberg visited with a foot specialist in Charlotte, North Carolina on Tuesday. Forsberg has had a chronic foot problem since 2001, and was being fitted for a special brace that he will wear in his skate. Forsberg will not miss any games due to this condition.
His problem is a rotation of his hind foot, or his rear foot in the skate boot. This is only his right foot.
The special brace is called an Arizona brace. He wont play any games with it until he is use to the device.

Keith Primeau done for the year

So it is now official. Keith Primeau will not be back this year in a Flyers uniform.
Here is what Primeau had to say…

In starting, I would like to thank all of those people who really helped me during the course of the winter. I would like to thank Mr. Snider and Bob Clarke for the opportunity to search out whatever medical advice that I needed to search for over the last few months. It’s refreshing to know as an athlete that you have support of the franchise. Their sincerity is genuine and it is much appreciated.

I made this decision with difficulty as I hoped to not get to this point. Although I have made progress in my recovery (and) my vision has cleared up in the last three weeks, which is a nice change of pace, because it was a constant reminder of the difficulty that I was having. I still have symptoms when I do my physical therapy.

At this time I’m not at 100 percent, not symptom-free and will not be able to finish this season. I have made this decision in hopes of prolonging my career and I will continue to strive to return in the Fall.

The reason for this press conference is to put to rest all the speculation about my returning this season and to afford the Flyers the opportunity to do what they need to do in order help our hockey club win a Championship. I discussed with Clarkie the best route to take yesterday and if I was feeling better by the time the playoffs (started), it will have been two years that I have played consistently and that makes me susceptible in itself.

The doctors believe that I am going to get better and they are very pleased with progress albeit slow. In due time, I will recover and I will have the opportunity to play again.

I don’t know if I have fully come to terms with the decision I’ve had to make. I’m a hockey player and that’s what I do. But, speaking to those that are the closest to me, it’s the right decision. It’s the right decision for my health and that is why I made the decision.”

With Primeau’s decision becoming official there is talk about picking up another player. But I have to say who? If the rest of the Flyers ever get healthy here is the lineup. Top line is Forsberg-Knuble-Gagne, Handzus-Nedved -Radivojevic, Carter-Umberger- Kapanen, Richards-Savage-Brashear. That’s 4 lines plus Stevenson.
The other 3 lines were a best guess. With all the injuries those really haven’t been set.
The only forward I can see the Flyers moving and is actually tradable is Radivojevic. But I just don’t see them doing that, Handzus would loss his buddy.
Defensively the Flyers have Hatcher-Pitkanen, Rathje-Meyer, Jones-Desjardins.
I just threw those lines together too.
Johnsson and Therien are both out with ‘head injuries’ and there is no time table at all when they could be back. If the Flyers do pickup any players, I see it on defense. But who do you pickup and who do you give-up?

Injury Update Feb 28

Keith Primeau is expected to announce he won’t be playing this season later today. The announcement will be made at 11am at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ. This has been pretty much known for the past month or so, the announcement just makes it official. Primeau is still experiencing spinning sensations. He has been injured since October 25 when Alexander Perezhogin delivered an elbow to his jaw.

Simon Gagne’s bruised knee is doing better than expected, according to Coach Ken Hitchcock. He is listed day to day.

Both Chris Therien and Kim Johnsson have head injuries and will be out indefinitely. Neither is well enough to do any sort of exercising. Therien was injured February 4 against the Rangers. Johnsson was injured in mid-January from a number of hits.

Michal Handzus injured his shoulder February 10 against the Washington Capitals, a hit from former Flyer, Dainius Zubrus. Handzus suffered a torn labrum that will require surgery after the season. He is expected to be out 10 days.

Returning to the lineup from injury are Peter Forsberg, Mike Rathje, Petr Nedved and Branko Radivojevic.
