Forsberg a Flyer???

The Calgary Sun has reported that former Flyer Peter Forsberg has been contacted by the Philadelphia Flyers to possibly return to the team as early as mid-November.

Currently Forsberg is recovering from his injuries last year by playing with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League.

Other teams interested in the veteran center are the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche and the Ottawa Senators. The Stars made the impressive move of sending GM Doug Armstrong and special adviser Brett Hull to Sweden to meet with Forsberg in a face-to-face meeting.

Phillyburbs.com writes, “he (Forsberg) wants to return to Philly to make amends for last season.”

Flyers GM Paul Homegren would welcome him with arms wide open. “If Peter is going to come back and he’s healthy, we would have interest,” Holmgren confirmed the other day. “And we would hope that he would have interest in coming here.”

The Flyers however only have $2.5 million in cap space left after all of their signings in the off season. Hopefully Forsberg will want to play due to the fact at how great the team has looked so far this year and not for the money.

I took the liberty to come up with some offensive line combinations if Forsberg would return….

Richards – Forsberg – Upshall
Richards – Forsberg – Lupul
Lupul – Forsberg – Kapanen
Kapanen – Forsberg – Hartnell

You decide!

Marty to the Rescue

Who would have thought that the Philadelphia Flyers goalie problem would be cured from the shadows of Dominik Hasek. For the last two games, Flyers goalie Martin Biron has baffled opponents by making highlight real saves. Over the span he has stopped 82 Shots and has not allowed a goal in over 137 minutes of play.

The Flyers, who are off to a much better start then last year find themselves 5-1 and on top of the Atlantic Division. They are also off to a perfect 3-0 start at home, much better than last year when they had a dismal record of 10-24-7. Beating the Devils on Thursday night also snapped an eight game losing streak to their division foe dating back to March 21, 2006.

Although Biron has been getting most of the credit, the offense has been on fire averaging 4.1 goals a game. This night was no different than past games. After a slow 1st period start, which seemed like the Wachovia Center ice was made of jello, the Flyers found their skating legs early in the second. Mike Richards scored on a bullet snap shot high to Martin Brodeur’s right side opening up the scoring.

Former Flyer’s goalie John Vanbiesbrouck, who was broadcasting the game on HDNet stated, “I believe whoever scores first, will open this game up.” He was right.

Less than 5 minutes latter Sami Kapanen scored on a knuckle puck that fooled Brodeur. The shot look like it came straight from Disney’s Mighty Ducks movie as it changed direction in mid flight to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead. Kapanen is off to one of his best starts in his career scoring goals in each of his last 3 games.

Who would have also thought after signing Daniel Briere to an 8 year $52 million contract, that Mike Richards would be only trailing him by 1 point? Briere with 9 points (4 G, 5 A) leads the team ahead of Richards 8 points (4,4) and newly acquired Joffrey Lupul is in third with 7 (2,5). Last year in a season that barely saw any production other then the top line, the Flyers are scoring at ease, and its coming with from the second, third and forth lines….a good feeling for any Flyers Fan.

Most fans might not notice the hard work of newly acquired Scott Hartnell. On Kapanens play Hartnell picked the Devils right winger allowing the puck to be taken by Kapanen down the ice for the goal. Other times when the Flyers are not skating hard, Hartnell is flying around at 110%, fore- checking and causing turnovers. Flyers Fans watch out….he will be a great player this year.

Interesting Note: The Flyers who had a horrible +/- rating last year only find 2 of their players in the negative. Who you may ask….Simon Gagne (-1) and Mike Knuble (-2). Defensemen Randy Jones leads the team (+8).

Kate Smith Sings God Bless America before 1976 Stanley Cup

Well the 1974 Kate Smith has disappeared from youtube, here is a 76 vid.

How can I have a Flyers website and not include Kate Smith.
The Flyers had 69 wins, 19 losses, and 3 ties when Kate Smith preformed at the spectrum.

Man, I get chills every time I watch that.

The 1974 video is back!

Flyers not for sale

While the 76ers appear to be in the process of being sold by their parent company, Comcast Spectacor, Comcast chairman Ed Snider said yesterday that the team that is nearest and dearest to his heart – the Flyers – is staying in his hands.

“The Flyers are absolutely not for sale,” Snider said by telephone, an assertion confirmed by an industry source with knowledge of the ongoing process. [.continue.]

Good, bad, does it matter?
It seems clear that Bob Clarke won’t be going anywhere until Ed Snider does. Snider is not a spring chicken anymore at age 73. For those that think ‘Clarke Must Go’¢ Snider’s age is working for them.

A couple interesting stats in the article…
The Flyers generate about $2million in revenue per home game, so times that by 41 games. The Flyers were third in the league in overall revenues before the lockout, before they were forced to cut there player salary expense.

Yet they deem it necessary to raise ticket prices for the fans this season, hmmm….

Flyers Sign Three Draft Picks

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have signed three recent draft choices to contracts, according to club Assistant General Manager Paul Holmgren. Forwards Frederik Cabana and Steve Downie have each signed a three-year entry-level contract, while defenseman Jussi Timonen has signed a two-year entry-level contract.

“These three players are all athletes that we have drafted over the past few years,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “Steve Downie was our first round draft pick from last year (2005). We are extremely excited to have him under contract. He has had a whirlwind year with what happened this past year. He got suspended from his team in Windsor and consequently was traded to Peterborough. He was one of the stars for Team Canada in the World Junior Championships where they won the gold medal. He ended up having a tremendous playoff run with Peterborough, making it to the Memorial Cup before losing out there. We think he’s going to be a very good prospect. He still has another year of junior eligibility so he will most likely go back to playing with his junior team. Steve is a hard-nosed, gritty, two-way player who has good skills. He is a lot like Mike Richards as to how he plays the game. He’s a plugger with extremely good hockey sense and ability.

Cabana is a guy who we drafted in 2004 and he has come on nicely. He is another kid that works really hard, knows the game and skates well. He has not put up great numbers in juniors, but he is a good, well-rounded player. He really understands the game and will be a good player in our organization with a chance to develop over the next few years.

Timonen was drafted in 2001. His brother, Kimmo, plays in Nashville and has been a good player in the NHL. Jussi is actually bigger than his brother. He is a good skater and good with the puck. It was time for him to come over here. He was excited when we contacted him and is looking forward to coming over here and getting started. We will see how he can adapt and adjust to the North American game.

They all will be here for Training Camp.” [.continue.]

It will be interesting to see how well they do.

Veronica Varekova on Maxim

Petr Nedved’s hot wife Veronica Varekova is on this month’s cover of Maxim
I guess that is one reason to keep Nedved next season. 🙂

Primeau Kapanen Gagne Updates

More surgery updates, first Captain Keith Primeau.

Keith Primeau on his nose surgery.

Q: You had your nosed operated this morning. How did it go?
Primeau: “Actually it went really well. I was really pleased that I had it done. I have been thinking about it upward of two years because of the pressure I felt from behind my nose. After having it done this morning I felt terrific immediately afterward. After my surgery I felt real relief and I am really looking forward to the recovery the next couple of weeks.”

Q: Did this sinus pressure from behind your nose have anything to do with your post concussion symptoms that kept you out last season?
Primeau: “I’m really not sure. There have been a lot of different things. There was obviously head trauma. But this is kind of the final stage in the healing process. It was important that I got it done. As I said, I just felt like because my nose is so off centered, the pressure that I was getting from the muscles was causing some of the lingering effects. I am just hoping this operation rectified that a bit.”

Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin talks about Sami Kapanen’s surgery.

Q: Can you tell us about Sami Kapanen?
McCrossin: “Sami underwent surgery today to clean-up his right shoulder. Dr. Peter DeLuca at Hahnemann Hospital performed the surgery. Sami’s bicep tendon was frayed a bit and Dr. DeLuca cleaned it up. Dr. DeLuca also repaired a small tear in his rotator cuff muscle.”

Q: What is rehab for Sami?
McCrossin: “I picked up Sami today. He is doing great and he will be starting rehab with me tomorrow. We are looking at about eight-to-10 weeks recovery time.”

Flyers Pink Jerseys

For the ladies or, umm, anyone else that is interested the Flyers have Pink Jerseys on sale now. I have read the pink jerseys selections include Forsberg, Gagne, Carter, Richards, Niittymaki, Primeau, Handzus, and Knuble versions.

The pink jerseys are on sale at the Wachovia Center Fan Gear stores. The jerseys are $150 and can only be purchased during home Flyers or Sixers games.

It is my understanding that there was interest in these at the Flyers Carnival and the Women’s Hockey 101 event.

This was something I should have written about this past week.

Over 300 female hockey fans attended a free clinic on the basics of the game from Flyers and Phantoms personnel on Monday night at the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, New Jersey.

Women’s Hockey 101 featured presentations by Flyers TV Color Analyst Steve Coates on the new NHL rules; Flyers Equipment Manager Harry Bricker gave an overview of hockey equipment and Flyers Athletic Trainer and Conditioning Coach Jim McCrossin on importance of nutrition and conditioning in the sport.

Phantoms Head Coach John Stevens and his wife Stacy were also in attendance and spoke on the everyday life of a pro hockey family. Following the presentations, the attendees participated in a fundamentals clinic led by Coates and a locker room tour led by McCrossin.
