Flyers Victory Song

The Flyers have introduced their new victory song, “The Orange and Black”, to be played at the Wachovia Center after each home win.

Too bad with the way the Flyers are playing that song might not get played this year.

You can hear the song here.
I heard it on MySpace earlier in the week.

Here are the lyrics.

Wake Up Philadelphia, and let me hear ya sing
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

Across the blue line we attack, we are
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

Re-load, and shoot again, we are
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

And a 1-2-3,
Let the hats to flying for a Flyers victory
And a 4-5-6,
Our bold battalion, may they take us all the way!

Down my family it was passed, we are
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

Kick the boards and pound the glass, we are
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

And a 1-2-3,
Let the hats to flying for a Flyers victory
And a 4-5-6,
Our bold battalion, may they take us all the way!

Wake Up Philadelphia, and let me hear ya sing
The Orange and the Black
The Orange and the Black!

29th Annual Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival

The 29th Annual Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival took place yesterday at the Wachovia Center. This is a huge fundraiser the Flyers do every season. Unfortunately there wasn’t one last year with the lock out. About 10,000 fans showed up for the event. Fans got to meet and chat with their favorite players. Pictures, autographs and games were the agenda for the day.
Through money raised at the Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival and through charitable efforts throughout the year, the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation provides donations, random gifts of kindness and player appearances to numerous non-profit groups, organizations and individuals to improve the quality of life in the Greater Philadelphia Region. To date, the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation has contributed more than $20 million to various charities.
If you missed the carivnal and would like to donate to the Flyers Wives Charities, you can do so here. The Flyers Wives Charities also has an online auction that is taking place over the remainder of the season.
Here are few photos from the event.

Neil Little Selected To Phantoms Hall Of Fame

Former Philadelphia Phantom Neil Little has been selected for the Philadelphia Phantoms Hall of Fame. Little, one of the original Phantom players was goalie for the first 8 years of the Phantoms existence. He is the only Phantom to play on both Calder Cup champion teams, 96-97, 04-05.
Little only played two games for the Flyers.
He is the third inductee, after Bill Barber and Frank Bialowas.
There will be a pre-game ceremony for Neil Little’s induction on April 7 at the Spectrum when the Phantoms host the Hershey Bears.
He is currently playing hockey in Europe. [.contine.]

Coach Ken Hitchcock

Ken Hitchcock has been coach for the Philadelphia Flyers for going on 3 seasons. He has won divisional championships 6 out of the 7 years he has coached in the NHL, including the Stanley Cup once. He has always been a winning coach going back to 1984 with the Kamloops in the WHL. With the Flyers stumbling as of late I have started to hear some fans start to bring up the F word when it comes to Hitchcock. I totally disagree with them. He deserves at least 5 full years of coaching before making judgment on his ability.

There has been talk in the blogs about Hitchcock that has nothing to do with his coaching ability. I usually let the name calling and such pass, but since James Mirtle wrote about it, I figure I put in my two cents worth.

Apparently over at HockeyBird.com someone didn’t like how the game ended with Donald Brashear going after Darius Kasparaitis on March 2. But let’s talk about Kasparaitis, it’s a known fact he is a borderline dirty player. I have nothing against borderline guys, it is what it is. But you have a situation where Simon Gagne, Flyers leading scorer, is injured in the Olympics by Kasparaitis on a borderline hit. Then in the beginning of the March 2 game Kasparaitis taking a run at Forsberg trying to take his head off. Someone had to respond and Brashear knows his role which is, in a way, to let Kasparaitis know they didn’t appreciate his play that much. The give and take is a part of hockey.
People have called what Brashear did dumb. He got a 1 game suspension and Hitchcock was fined 10 grand. Personally I think the suspension and fine rules, new this year are dumb. But that is a whole other article. The Flyers play as of late has been mediocre. No hustle, no passion, no heart. Brashear was one of the few showing they actually cared that night, for Brashear that is a good thing.

But back to Hitchcock, HockeyBird had this to say about him.
“I don’t want to get too personal and judgmental here, but Ken Hitchcock is a big fat guy. Just enormous. Corpulent. How fat is he? Every time someone walks around him, they get one year older. He’s huge. Fat and flabby. Just a big bowl of chub.”

I’m glad you didn’t get too personal. This isn’t the first time HockeyBird has looked so juvenile, from March 3, 2004.
Fat guy + bad suit = shooting fish + barrel. Hitch’s corpulence gives him a Brando-esque stateliness, and his Flyers players don’t seem to rally around him as much as simply being drawn into orbit by a strong gravitational pull. I don’t know what sophisticated system of girdles and pulleys and buttresses are holding his seams together, but whoever tailored it should be working for NASA. Work it, fat man!

The search feature on the site is a wonderful thing.

I personally don’t care about the name calling, it just shows the level of class whatever it is, the blog authors have. I do want to point out whoever is interested to this article on Ken Hitchcock written back in 1998. The article talks about him losing his father to cancer at age 14, his girlfriend to a car accident at age 15 and his mother to cancer at age 20. Events that led to his weight gain, and how he has worked thru these demons. Maybe if people realize why certain people are a certain way there will be more understanding shown.

Flyers Wives Fight for Lives Carnival

The 29th Annual Flyers Wives Fight For Lives Carnival will take place at the Wachovia Center on Sunday, March 26 from 1:30 until 6:00 p.m. The Wachovia Center will be transformed into professional sports’ largest fund-raiser, including photo booths and autograph sessions with Flyers players and alumni, shoot on goal, dunk tanks and other games of chance. Fans can also have their photograph taken with the Stanley Cup.

More information can be found here.

A picture from last years carnival. At the time a Phantom, Freddy Meyer in the dunk both.

But we know Petr Nedved’s wife is the one everyone will be looking for.

Rick Tocchet

Former Flyer Rick Tocchet has been accused by New Jersey law enforcement officials of financing an illegal sports betting ring. This has created a big buzz in the hockey world, reports saying this could be a disaster for the NHL.
Me, eh, I don’t see it as a big deal. As of right now, it has not been shown that he or another person (including Roenick or “The Great One”s wife) bet on hockey. So there really haven’t been any NHL regulations broken.
Dont get me wrong, I think if Tocchet has broken any laws he should pay whatever penalty is appropriate. But, really the only crime shown so far is Uncle Sam not getting his cut, which is why the gambling ring is considered illegal.

The thing is gambling can be and is legal in many situations. When I was a kid some of the females in my family would head to the local fire hall on Thursday nights and play bingo with the proceeds going to the volunteer fire department. Even I pick up a lotto ticket on occasion, gambling again with proceeds going to the state government. And yes, sports betting is also legal. For those interested Sports Interaction, based out of Canada is licensed and regulated in North America is one of the legal places to go. Former NHL quarback Jim Kelly is the public face for this site. Open an account for $20 and place bets as small as $1. Bets on NHL, NFL, MLB, Olympics, PGA, boxing, etc. whatever your sport. Heck, you can even bet on the academy awards or who the next US President is gong to be. Not legal anymore, at least in the US, sad.

So I hope the best for Rick Tocchet, he was a great Flyer. Until he has his day in court I don’t think he should be vilified in the media for ‘illegal betting’.

Flyers Welcome Miss New Jersey

The Flyers welcomed a special visitor to practice on Wednesday when Miss New Jersey, Julie Robenhymer, visited the Sovereign Bank Flyers Skate Zone. Robenhymer is the reigning Miss New Jersey 2005 and recently returned from the Miss America Pageant. Here, she is presented by a team-signed Flyers jersey by Peter Forsberg and Simon Gagne.
Robenhymer is originally from Moorestown, New Jersey, and grew up as a big Flyers fan.

It’s fitting that she is from New Jersey considering thats where the entire team lives and practices.

Here is a picture of her kissing Stoney the llama on Saturday at Moorestown’s holiday parade. Nice, no wonder she didnt win the pageant.

Peter Forsberg the untold story.

Over at Jes Golbez’s Hockey Rants is The Peter Forsberg Slideshow which is well, kinda funny.
