Inside Flyers’ win over Senators

FLYERS 6, SENATORS 4: There were times last season when the Flyers would surrender a two-goal lead in the third period and press the panic button. “Last year, if we gave up a late goal, we sat back and waited for the next goal to happen,” Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen acknowledged

Richards looking to reconcile with puck

Flyers center Mike Richards has been one of the Flyers’ most consistent scorers this season, but lately he’s been in a scoring slump. The 23-year-old center skates into Tuesday’s home game against the Ottawa Senators without a point in his last three games, the longest scoring drought of his season. “I am fighting the puck,” Richards said after the Flyers’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils, in which he scored the Flyers’ lone shootout goal

Inside Flyers’ loss to Devils

DEVILS 3, FLYERS 2 (SO): Early penalties by the Flyers – two of them by veteran defenseman Kimmo Timonen – set the tone as the Devils grabbed a 2-0 lead. But the Philly Sky Line of Jeff Carter, Joffrey Lupul and Scott Hartnell – all three live in Philadelphia’s Olde City section – produced a goal in the second period and another late in the third to earn a point. Flyers coach John Stevens went with a shootout lineup of: Simon Gagne (5-hole save); Mike Richards (glove side goal); Jeff Carter (left shoulder save); Kimmo Timonen (glove save) and Joffrey Lupul (left pad save). Flyers goaltender Antero Niittymaki allowed goals to Jamie Langenbrunner and Travis Zajac in the shootout to fall to 1-1 in shootouts this season.

Niitty again vs Devils?

Goaltender Marty Biron has recovered from a nasty three-day bout with the flu, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be in goal Sunday when the Flyers visit the New Jersey Devils. Backup Antero Niittymaki is coming off his best goaltending performance of the season, a 47-save effort against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, and is expected to be in goal when the Flyers try to win their seventh game in eight tries against their division rivals. Defenseman Randy Jones, who signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract last summer, is expected to make his season debut after missing the first 32 games because of hip surgery. Look for Jones to be paired with 18-year-old rookie Luca Sbisa.

Inside the Flyers’ win over Avs

FLYERS 5, AVALANCHE 2: A major factor in the Flyers’ five-week climb up the Eastern Conference standings – they now own the third-best record behind the Bruins and Rangers – has been their special teams play. With their two power-play goals against the Avs they improved to 14-for-33 over their last seven games, pushing them into second place in the NHL. They also scored their league-best 12th shorthanded goal when Jeff Carter finished off a 2-on-1 with Simon Gagne.
