Meltzer’s Musings: Today’s Games, Flyers All-Time Roster

Jakub Voracek scored a goal in a losing cause yesterday as HC Lev Prague dropped a 4-2 decision to Barys Astana in KHL action. Voracek, who skated 16:56 of ice time and generated three shots on goal, briefly tied the game at 2-2 in the second period. He has two points (1G, 1A) in two games to date.

Ruslan Fedotenko and ex-Flyer Oskars Bartulis are in the starting lineup today for HC Donbass as Continue reading

Paul Holmgren interview February 24

Paul Holmgren discusses Zherdev & Bartulis during the Flyers-Isles game.

Inside Flyers’ 3-2 OT loss to Phoenix

Oskars Bartulis didn’t have much of a chance to prove he belongs in the Flyers’ lineup. Playing his first game since Jan. 11, Bartulis was fishing for a loose puck at the side of the net when Phoenix Coyotes forward Scottie Upshall ran him over like a freight train, injuring his left shoulder. “Oskars is just standing there minding his own business,” Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said. “It was a late hit and depending on how Oskars is, yes, I have a little bit of a problem with it. Even More Depth

Oskars Bartulis is a player that many NHL teams would like to have, not just on their roster, but playing against the opponents top players on any given night. The Philadelphia Flyers know this and quickly signed the 24-year-old native of Latvi… Continue reading

Meltzer’s Musings: 1/28/11

In my opinion, the Flyers made the right move in waiving defenseman Matt Walker. The move frees up salary space to potentially make a move at the trade deadline. Walker, who is now recovered from hip surgery, also needs playing time, and he wasn’t about to crack the Flyers’ top six the rest of this season barring injury. Is he a better option than Oskars Bartulis? Marginally, perhaps. Continue reading

Pronger Out 4-6 Weeks!

Well,  we got the news today that Chris Pronger will be out of the line- up for 4-6 weeks. Pronger under went surgery on his foot today and most likely will miss 11-17 games. The Flyers will put Pronger on injury reserve and Oskars Bartulis will come down from the press box to take his place. Not to worry Fans our defensive core is solid and I have no doubt they will pick up the slack. Possible pairings the Flyers will go with on Saturday are, Bartulis/O’Donnell, Meszaros/Carle, Timonen/Coburn.  With Pronger on IR, they will not be calling anybody up from the Phantoms at this time. Pronger injured in 5-3 win in Montreal

Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger did not play in the final period of the Flyers’ win in Montreal because of what the club called a lower body injury. Pronger underwent reconstructive surgery on his right knee over the summer and missed the first two games of the season. He leads all Flyers defensemen in points with 15. If Pronger cannot play Saturday against the Rangers, look for Oskars Bartulis to see his first NHL action since Nov. 1 Continue reading

Meltzer's Musings: Battle for 7th D

One of the most interesting battles in training camp is the battle for the seventh defense spot between Matt Walker and Oskars Bartulis. I have stated my opinion of the situation numerous times on the message board, and will reiterate it here. In the pre-cap NHL, Walker would have been an ideal number seven defenseman: a veteran depth guy who brings toughness and a strong work ethic. In the pre Continue reading
