Briere fined for swipe at Prust

The NHL has fined Flyers center Danny Briere an undisclosed amount for the punch he threw at Rangers forward Brandon Prust in the closing seconds of Sunday night’s 3-2 win in Madison Square Garden. In the waning seconds of the Flyers’ victory, their sixth in seven games, Prust drove Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen hard into the boards with a blindside hit that was borderline late. Replays show that as Prust passed the Flyers bench, Briere and Scott Hartnell took swipes at him, grazing him in the head before linesman Jean Morin escorted Prust to the bench. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Monday he was unaware of the incident but acknowledged Monday night that Briere had been fined. Although the NHL did not release the amount of the fine it is believed to be $1,000.

Hartnell, Briere tussle with Prust from bench

Many of the fans missed it and so did several television cameras. Prust had just leveled Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen after Timonen fired a backhander down the ice to kill a Rangers rally and preserve the win.

Flyers making pitch for Langenbrunner?

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren managed only a “no comment,” when asked about his interest in Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner, who sat out Thursday night’s 4-2 Flyers victory in Newark and is expected to be traded on Friday. The Flyers reportedly offered two draft picks for Langenbrunner but were denied. The Flyers have a first-rounder and a third-rounder, but lost their 2011 second-round pick in the Scottie Upshall for Dan Carcillo trade.
