Phantoms sign goalie to tryout contract

The Adirondack Phantoms, AHL affiliate of the Flyers, announced today that they have signed goaltender Carter Hutton to an amateur tryout agreement. Hutton, 24, joins Adirondack after completing his senior season at the University of Massachusetts Lowell of Hockey East. The Thunder Bay, Ontario native had a stellar year for the River Hawks, leading Hockey East in goals-against average (2.04), save percentage (0.928) and shutouts (4), while posting a 13-12-2 record in 27 games played. Hutton completed his four-year career at UMass-Lowell as the school’s All-Time Leader in shutouts (10) and goals-against average (2.33) and is tied for the career lead in save percentage (0.913)…

Flyers sign 23-year-old forward prospect

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’3”, 220-pound forward Mike Testwuide from Colorado College to a future contract which will begin at the start of the 2010-11 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Testwuide, 23, recently completed his senior year with the Colorado College Tigers of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), where he posted 31 points (21G,10A) and 24 penalty minutes in 36 games. His 21 goals led all players on the team and were a career high, while his 31 points were also a career high and ranked second on the team. He also led the Tigers with five game-winning goals, eight power-play goals and three shorthanded goals on the season. Over a course of four seasons with Colorado College (2006-07 to 2009-10), including serving his final year as captain of the Tigers, Testwuide registered 44 goals and 27 assists for 71 points and 100 penalty minutes in 134 games. Prior to joining Colorado College, the Vail, Colo. native played two seasons with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL) where he recorded 41 points (20G,21A) in 100 games.

Flyers sign forward Holmstrom

The Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’1”, 202-pound forward Ben Holmstrom from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks to a future contract which will begin at the start of the 2010-11 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Holmstrom, 22, recently completed his senior year at UMass-Lowell of the Hockey East Association of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), where he recorded 23 points (9G,14A) and 69 penalty minutes in 39 games. His 23 points tied for fourth on the team and he led all River Hawks with four game-winning goals. He was recently honored by the Hockey East Association by being named Best Defensive Forward for the 2009-10 season, becoming the first UMass-Lowell player to receive the honor since 1998-99. Over a course of four seasons with the River Hawks (2006-07 to 2009-10), three of which he was captain, Holmstrom has compiled 26 goals and 58 assists for 84 points and 201 penalty minutes in 144 games. Prior to joining UMass-Lowell, he played three seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and helped lead the team to the Anderson Cup in 2006

Flyers sign Betts for two years, $1.4 million

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’3’’, 210-pound center Blair Betts to a multi-year contract extension, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. The contract is believed to be for two years at $700,000 per season. “Blair has been a valuable addition to our team this year,” said Holmgren. “He has a strong work ethic and plays an important role on our team. We are pleased to have him under contract for the future.” Betts, 29, has six goals and four assists for 10 points and 12 penalty minutes in 39 games thus far in his first season with the Flyers. He has also missed 19 games due to injury. “I’m really happy with the new contract,” said Betts. “It was exactly what I was looking for

Flyers claim goalie Leighton from Hurricanes

The Flyers announced today that they have claimed 6’3’’, 186-pound goaltender Michael Leighton (LAY-tohn) on waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Leighton, 28, has appeared in seven games with the Hurricanes this season, posting a 1-4-0 record with a 4.28 goals-against average and .848 save percentage. In 2008-09, he had a 6-7-2 record with a 2.92 GAA and .901 save percentage in 19 appearances, and his six wins matched his NHL career-high. This will be Leighton’s second stint with the Flyers, having also appeared in four games during the 2006-07 season, where he posted a 2-2-0 mark, a 3.69 GAA and a .882 save percentage. He was originally claimed on waivers by the Flyers on Jan. 11, 2007.
